Question - Promotion and Raises

Just wondering, When someone gets a promotion, is it normal to get the same percent raise that you would if you only got a raise and not a promotion? Or should the raise percent be higher if you got a promotion too?
Thanks

Re: Question - Promotion and Raises

I think it would be contingent on how much added job responsibility I would have.
If it was a ton, then I would negotiate to get higher than the norm.
When is your review date, you can use that as part of negotiating as well.

Re: Question - Promotion and Raises

well,I know in my husband's job, there are clearly defined levels & each level has a range, so depending where you are in level 1, it may be a big jump to get to the minimum of level 2.

When they just get a raise, I think everyone gets a similar percent, which is proabably smaller than the promotion pay scale jump.

Here, on the other hand, I had juat gotten a $3,000 raise with my 1 year review & then I was promoted when soemone left 2 months later, so I just got a $1000 raise. Chat Icon Ther is no real system here.

Re: Question - Promotion and Raises

Sometimes we give promotions without giving raises at all. Sometimes they come 6-months down the road. Sometimes not for longer than that.
With a promotion you cannot always expect a HUGE pay raise.

Re: Question - Promotion and Raises

I technically started in this position october 25th 2004, and I just got the promotion. Thats how it goes at my company.

I wish I would get a $3000 raise. Consider yourself lucky

Re: Question - Promotion and Raises

when DH got his promotion he got a raise to bring his salary commensurate with others in the field with similar skill sets. salary.com has that info. i believe.
