question about 1 yr old on flight
Hi, I don't know if this is a dumb question but we are going to FL soon and booked a seat for our 1 yr old. Do we just strap him in the seat or do we put him in his carseat in the airplane seat ? I heard a few different answers on this !! Thanks so much !!

Use his carseat strapped into the airplane seat

Re: question about 1 yr old on flight
You didn't "have" to get a seat- kids under 2 can sit on your lap. But since you do have the extra seat, I would use the carseat.

Re: question about 1 yr old on flight
don;t waste your money, cancel his seat, for a 2 1/2 hr flight he'll hardly sit by himself

Re: question about 1 yr old on flight
I have flown transatlantic with my 1 year old recently and I held him in my lap for the whole flight and he sat in the seat next to me and drew on a book using the tray. I wouldn't book a seat, the staff will usually block off a section for you and help you out with extra seats.

Re: question about 1 yr old on flight
We're flying across the country in June, and we booked a seat for DD, who will be just over 1 year. DS will be 4, so he has to have a seat. We are bringing the car seats for both of them. Yes, we could take our chances and try to save money by not getting DD a seat, but if the plane is full, then we are out of luck. I'd hate to have to keep DD on our lap (where she could easily fall and hurt herself if there is bad turbulence) for the entire trip. Her safety, and our sanity is worth the extra money.

I disagree. I used to travel with DS a lot and he always sat in his seat at that age. Not to mention it's safer. You wouldn't drive a car without your child strapped in, so why would you fly on a plane like that?

ITA with the two previous posters.
As a flight attendant for the past 13 years, I have witnessed MANY injuries to little ones who were lap children and not strapped into their own seat. You never know when there is going to be turbulance, a missed approach, or an aborted take-off. As rare as these occurances are, they DO occur at times.

See I find this strange because when I booked my flights with Delta and USAIR over the last year they told me that they wouldn't book a seat for a child that was 1 year old. I did ask because I thought it might be a good idea. They don't even give out lap belts for children anymore...I asked for them and they said they don't do them. I wonder why this is.

I would have called back and spoke to someone else. They DO book seats for ANY paying customer, regardless of age. And, typically children under 2 are 50% off.
Lap belts attaching children to their parents are not safe for take off and landing, hence the reason they aren't provided.

I wonder if its all different on international flights. I usually fly internationally...

I am flying Southwest with my son in June, he'll be a little over a year old. We booked him a seat too...it's our first time travelling with him on an airplane and the tickets were SO cheap, less than $40 b/c of this special they had, so we figured why not. I called Southwest to see about booking a seat for an infant and the lady said just book it like you're booking for an adult. They don't need a seat but I figured can't hurt for that price to have a seat for him for the extra room for us, just in case it's a fully booked flight.

totally different If there were traffic and conjestion in the air like it is on the roads, I would definitely get a seat and have my kids buckled in the entie time. My friend is an airline attendant, she never recommends buying a seat for any child under 18 months.

Re: question about 1 yr old on flight
Not really different, but I'm not going to argue. Turbulence can seriously injure or even kill a small child. My mom is a flight attendant as well :)

The last two times we flew Southwest, I didn't book a seat and both times they gave me one when I got there since the plane wasn't full.

Re: question about 1 yr old on flight
If you booked a seat for him, I would bring the car seat. I doubt he'll want to be strapped into the regular belt and probably wouldn't even fit.
We're flying with DS next month to the Dominican Republic. We didn't buy him a seat, he's sitting on my lap.
I think everyone needs to do what they think is best, and just feel comfortable in their decision.
