Question about amnios
My friend is 35 and pregnant with twins. Her maternity 21 test came back great (99% sure no trisomy or downs), and she will get her nuchal results today. She called me last night and said her ob brought up having an amnio done on both babies since she is 35. I have never heard of anyone doing an amino when all their blood work results come back great.
Is this a new thing that docs are suggesting? I don't understand because there is a risk of miscarriage with an amnio and I think that risk is even higher with twins, right?

Question about amnios
I'd never heard of amnio because of the mother's age either.
Is your friend 100% sure that no other markers came up during testing?
Does she have a family history of downs or other chromosome issues? Maybe that's the reason?
Either way, Is your friend 100% sure that no other markers came up during testing?
I wouldn't do an amnio "just because" ... but she should definitely discuss everything with her doctor and/or genetic counselor.
She should also consider what she would do if she found out one of the twins did have a problem ... would she keep the babies anyhow? If so, it's definitely not worth the risk of an amnio.

No other issues in their history, they were both tested before getting pregnant and they aren't carriers for anything. We talked a lot about the issue of what they would do if anything came up on an amnio too, because it's twins. I was just so confused that he OB would even mention an amnio with great blood test results. And as a first time mommy to be and someone who went through a lot to get pregnant she is obviously worried about covering all her bases. I figured I would ask her to see if this was something new.

My dr highly suggested the amnio bc I am 35. I declined and instead opted for the Panorama blood test, one of several new blood tests that can detect chromosomal abnormalities with 99% accuracy. There are less invasive options available now.
Oops, missed that she already had the bloodtest. No idea then why the dr would still want an amnio. Age alone should def not be a reason. I think she needs to ask the dr for clarification.

But I had an amnio, I was 29 so it wasn't that, but I had one because the doc was thinking about going in (via c-section) earlier than my due-date and wanted to make sure the lungs were fully developed. Something they gather from the fluid in the amnio.
Maybe it's that?

No, it's not for delivery. She's only 12 weeks.

I agree with this. I would never get an amnio unless there was a reason to get one- family history, bad results from testing, etc. I never heard of getting it just for age. Usually they will do non invasive tests first and it those results are poor or questionable they will send you for an amnio. Age alone shouldn't matter especially if she already had a maternity 21 test that came back normal. Those tests are nearly 99% accurate.
I would never do an invasive test such as an amnio or cvs unless there is a reason to because there is a risk of miscarriage. General rule of thumb I thought was to only go for the amnio/CVS if the chances of a genetic or chromosomal abnormality was higher than the risk of miscarriage from the test.

Yeah, that's what I heard too.
Amnio / cvs is the only way to be 100% certain of any genetic abnormalities (the blood test are screening tests only - they just tell you the amount of risk you have) so I'm wondering if the OB just said that if your friend wants to be 100% sure that the babies are "normal", she should get an amnio.

Question about amnios
I got an amnio. I was 38 when I was pregnant. I did not have any other testing. I refused the 12 week test because they do not give you actual results just some 1 in whatever. It give false odds in so many cases if the mother is of advanced maternal age and a BS test IMO.
This was before the Materni21 test and I am not familiar with it but if it still gave odds rather than actual results I would also not do it.
I also had all sorts of testing done before we got PG because we were going to do IVF so we didn't think we had high odds for many thing but lots is not genetic.
An amnio is not done until somewhere around 17 weeks usually.
It is also not risky these days. The rates of miscarriage are actually very low and its sono guided so the babies are not at risk.
People think its risky because of old data.
