Question about BF and formula....
I always read that some women freak out in the hospital when their baby is given formula. I want to BF, but since I am having twins and usually your milk takes a little while to come in, I am guessing I am going to have to supplement with formula for a little while.
Is this bad? Why is it that some women get so upset over this? Is it bad to mix formula and breast milk?
Twins are usually lower weight than a normal baby so I am guessing they are going to want them to gain as much weight as possible in the beginning....does formula fatten them up more than BM?
Sorry for all the questions, i'm just confused!!

Re: Question about BF and formula....
It's not bad at all. You have to do what's best for your babies!
While i was in the hospital, i BF and supplemented with formula. There's nothing wrong with it.
You do what you think is right or what you need to do! Don't let anyone tell you different!
ETA: yes formula definitely makes them gain more weight than BM. Formula is a lot thicker.

Re: Question about BF and formula....
Women who want to exclusively Breastfeed don't want baby to have any formula. It's just someone's preference for what their baby is ingesting.
For you, I would tell the doctors that you plan on BFing your twins and that you will need a Lacation Consultant visit ASAP and you will need a pump in the hospital to start stimulating milk production.
A friend of a friend had twins and she was able to feed & pump and get her supply up rather quickly.

Re: Question about BF and formula....
I think that people worry about the baby drinking from a bottle and getting confused between the bottle & breast, and therefore having a difficult time latching onto the breast after having a bottle. At least that was my worry, since I really wanted DD to do well with breastfeeding.
Not every baby has problems going from breast/bottle, so it's not a problem every time. It's just something that I heard about and worried about.

Re: Question about BF and formula....
I think the reason many women do not want their babies to have formula in the hospital is when they plan to EBF and they don't want there to be any nipple confusion. Some babies will stop taking the breast if they start taking bottles... not with all, but I think that is the fear with some moms. You are going to do what is best for your babies!

Ditto. I exclusively BF with my first, but she ended up getting jaundice because I was basically starving her since my milk wasn't in and she wasn't peeing enough to get rid of the jaundice and ended up having to stay longer. This isn't always the case, but was with me. So this time I supplemented right away and he was so much more satisfied and content than her! Do whatever works for YOU!

Re: Question about BF and formula....
You have to do what you believe to be best for your little ones! I wanted to BF (and I am) but b/c of my quick delivery, Ryan had some issues adjusting to the world (low glucose). I tried to nurse him the first couple of days but his level wasn't going up so the hospital gave me the option of having him supplemented with formula in the NICU. There was no way I was going to risk his well-being just to avoid him having formula. He had it and it made no difference when we came home - he has been EBF ever since day 4 and believe me, has had no confusion or issues with weight gain (he's a chunker!) My friend said her OB/GYN nursed and did a formula feed at night from day 1. You have to do what's good for you and your family. I applaud you for giving nursing a shot with twins

Re: Question about BF and formula....
I was going to exclusively BF in the hospital, but I was so tired at night that every time they brought the baby in, I couldn't do it so the nurses encouraged me to BF during the day and get my sleep at night and they would FF him. It worked out and he wasn't confused. The first week is difficult b/c a lot of times your milk might take longer to come in.

Not every baby has problems going from breast/bottle, so it's not a problem every time. It's just something that I heard about and worried about.
This was my concern..........and it turned out to be valid in my case
DS spent 3 days in the NICU and because he had a fever they INSISTED on supplementing. Plus he had trouble latching on. NO ONE ever offered for a LC to see me, I didn't know to ASK for one & when I came home we had such a TOUGH time BF until I had to call a private LC & pay for it to find out what the issues were.
And my DS seems to not take well to formula....he was VERY congested while he was still having it & since being EBF, no more congestion.
Anywho....sorry for the rant! What i am saying is ASK for the LC right away if you really only want to BF and your milk will llikely come in quickly between the babies BFing & pumping! Good luck to you!

What many woman unfortunately don't know is that before your milk comes in your breasts produce collastrum-- known also as liquid gold in the world of LC-- which is ALL babies need for the first few days of their lives. So giving any formula is really not at all necessary, despite of what you might be led to believe.
But of course, you should do whatever makes you comfortable.
Best of luck and feel free to ask any ?? anytime!
