Question about bug in my kitchen (WARNING: PICS)
We recently moved into a historical home and I knew before moving here that there would probably be more bugs and what not since our house is from 1740.. we live on the second floor (which I guess makes things a little better) but so far we actually haven't had much of a problem at all..
Yesterday my husband killed a bug in the kitchen, he claimed that it was a cockroach and was making a big deal out of it (he had killed one like this in our old place also.. and made the same big deal..) I am almost 100% sure that this is NOT what a cockroach looks like..
I looked for pics online of what these bugs look like and it says they are called silverfish? or firebrats? and they are often found in kitchens and are pretty much harmless
Am I right? That isn't a cockroach? Is it?
There were only 2 so I think maybe I should take a chill pill.. I'm acutally not very scared of bugs.. I just want to know if we have roaches

Re: Question about bug in my kitchen (WARNING: PICS)
It's a Silverfish (also called Earwigs) they are like cockaroaches in that you have to get an exterminator to deal with the problem. They are gross--I had them in my old apartment. They tend to also be seasonal, in that I only would get them in Spring/Summer
Sorry I coudln't be of more help

Re: Question about bug in my kitchen (WARNING: PICS)
So.. they are bad? Like cockroaches?
If I only see a few should I even do anything?.. obviously I will keep an eye out for them ..
Any ideas on what I should use on them to kill them or make them go away..? I have a 2 1/2 yr old and don't want to use any crazy chemicals.. but that is pretty gross and I don't want it to get worse

Silica gel is the least toxic way to deal with Silverfish (it soaks up moisture which is not good for the bug, wont go into details cause its gross.) You can buy it sometime from an art store(cause its used w/ dried flowers on ocassion), or just start saving/taking those little packets that always come in shoe boxes. Anyway, if you get silica gel in a powdered form, be careful and wear a mask when laying it down, but its not harmful to the touch at all.
Anyway, silica gel in whatever form will be the best bet for making sure you keep these super creepy bugs at bay...

They do thrive in humid environments but its usually the duo of the wetness and what they like to eat (like bookbinding glue, starches in different papers, cotton and cereals)
They are so nasty, but pretty easy to get rid of...

No, they are two different things. Silverfish are silver, and they may come bigger, but I've never seen one bigger than a dime.
However, that second pic you posted up there - I've seen something like that but with a heck of a lot more legs than that, and it was reddish brown. And huge, like 2 inches long. Found one in my sink once, THAT freaked me out. And then another time I found one in a bag of potting soil. It actually crawled on my HAND.

Re: Question about bug in my kitchen (WARNING: PICS)
Yeah- that's a silverfish. To my knowledge they're harmful- but the thought of them in your house is gross--- we used to see them from time to time in our old apartment in Queens- usually in the tub or in the kitchen (always near a water source). They're not earwigs... different. Here's what I found online on how to get rid of them:
Reduce Humidity. Water is the key element for silverfish survival. Ventilate attics and basements. Invest in dehumidifiers and fans. Remove water sources. Replace or fix leaky pipes and faucets. Close shower curtains completely. If you don’t have to worry about pets or children getting into it, place silica gel in corners, holes, cracks and in the cupboard under the sink Sanitation. Silverfish are able to live up to a year without food. Be sure to sweep, vacuum or mop diligently. Silverfish eat cereal grains, starches and anything else they can find. They also eat paper, paper sizing and book glue so keep papers, magazines and books in containers with tight lids. Cotton, silk, and linens are also tasty so pick up the laundry and pay attention to what your rugs are made from. Get rid of mold too, it’s also on the menu.
Repair or remove wallpaper. Wallpaper glue can serve as a silverfish meal. If the corners or the edges of a strip of wall paper are peeling or coming up you will need to either reattach it, cut it off, or worst case scenario (and most effective) remove the wallpaper altogether.
Regulate Heat and Light. Common silverfish do not like heat or light. They prefer temps between 70 and 80° F. If you can tolerate it, heat the infested room to above 80°F or cool it to 60°F. Use light to force them into areas where they are easier to control.
Cover or fill entry points. Look carefully for any holes or cracks in walls and floors. Use plaster or caulking to fill them. Silverfish use these holes for entrance to your home. They will also use these same protected places to deposit eggs. Pay extra attention to the small crack between the runner board and the floor.
Silverfish Extermination Taking care of an existing silverfish infestation will usually require a combination of preventative measures plus a substance for killing silverfish. After you have removed the water, food and humidity it’s time to say good bye to the silverfish bug. The number of commercial products for silverfish pest control is astounding. Residual sprays containing Cypermethrin such as Demon WP, Cynoff WP and Cyper WP leave a film on surfaces allowing these insecticides to work for several months. Talstar One works in the same manner but does not leave a visible residue. Baits such as Niban, Intice Granular Baits and Silverfish Paks work well to lure out the silverfish pest. Dessicants, like Drione Dust dry the silverfish out and work very well for filling in cracks. Aerosols such as Raid and Air Devil are also nice for harder to reach places. As with all insecticides, read the directions and warnings very carefully. Not all are meant for indoor use where people and animals might come into contact with them.

It's a silverfish. I despise them and they send me into a blind panic when I see them, but I'm phobic. They're actually harmless. And it's not like having roaches, they are seasonal; I find when the weather gets very humid or very hot I see them in my apartment more often.
