Re: Question about Connecticut....
Fairfield, Danbury, areas of Stamford, Trumbell, Darien (small but cute!)
Then the pricier areas like Greenwich!

Re: Question about Connecticut....
We're also toying with the idea of moving to lower CT, the Cos Cob, Greenwich areas. My DH works in Queens, so he is open to traveling the Hutch each way.
My brother loves in CT, in Shelton. Really nice area, but quite a ways up (exit 51 off the Merritt). He used to live in Fairfield and it was nice where he was too.

Darien is not cheap at all. The cheapest houses are at least $500,000. Any towns near the shore are pretty expensive. Norwalk is probably one of the more affordable areas, but there are nice and not so nice areas. I don't think the school district is great. Stamford has affordable houses, but I'm not sure how great those areas are. There are nice and not so nice parts. Danbury is reasonable, but if you work in NYC, the commute is a pain b/c you need to take the local line to South Norwalk and then transfer to the Metro-North (SoNo to NYC is anywhere from 55 to 70 minutes). How far into CT are you willing to look? There are much more affordable areas the further inland you go and the further away you get from NYC.

Re: Question about Connecticut....
my sister actually just bought a house in CT, not sure exactly where, but I can find out. They have a huge piece of property (2 acres ) and i'm not sure how much they actually paid, but it ws well under what houses are here on LI.

Re: Question about Connecticut....
Taxes are also less than NY. We are tossing around the idea of moving there. We like Danbury but we also love the more rural parts of the state. They're so quaint and charming.

Mystic definitely has affordable houses. I think a lot of the areas way out east are affordable.

Re: Question about Connecticut....
I work in Stamford but live in Westchester. I've heard there are affordable places in Stamford and Norwalk. If you go any further it is cheaper however if you work south of that the traffic is a nightmare. People in my office are constantly complaining. I saw it first hand the other day since I had to go to our East Windsor location which is near Hartford. Traffic on the Merrit was backed up from Trumbull to Stamford. Just something to keep in mind!

Hartford is an hour north from that house.
Is the Bridgeport area too far for you? There are a couple of towns a little north of Bridgeport that are nice and are affordable. Most of the houses in Monroe that are in the $375,000 - $500,000 range are on at least .75 - 1.0 acre. There are also a few suburbs surrounding New Haven that are nice, but that is probably too far if you're commuting to NY for work.

Stonington is by the RI border off 95. Very far. Bridgeport is not nice at all, very bad areas and a jail. No thank you. Try around the Stamford area. Darien and Greenwich are very pricey.

Re: Question about Connecticut....
I grew up in CT so I can tell you all about different areas. The most expensive is southern CT/Fairfield County = Greenwich, Cos Cob, Easton, Weston, etc
Another great area, but also expensive is up north near Hartford = Avon, West Hartford, Farmington, etc
If you aren't going to work in the city I would go up a bit North = Shelton/Hungtington, Wallingford, Cheshire, Plantsville, Orange, Milford
Let me know if you have any other questions. My mom and closest friends still live up there - we go up at least once a month.

I didn't suggest living in Bridgeport. I suggested towns 15-20 minutes north of there, which are quiet and affordable. Stamford is probably the most reasonably priced of the shoreline communities near NY, but there are bad areas of Stamford too.
