Question about ER retrieval and transfer
Looks like I will have my first ER early next week
I have a few questions that I'm hoping you girls can answer
1 - How bad do you feel after the ER? Do you take pain meds? How long do you usually feel pain?
2 - What is the difference bt 3 day and a 5 day transfer? What determines what day you will go in?
3 - Do you usually rest for a day or two after transfer?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting nervous !

1 - I felt groggy from the anesthia, but really felt no pain. I had cramps when I woke up after the ER, but they gave me a Tylenol with Codine and a warm pack on my tummy which helped. I took it easy the rest of the day, and pretty much napped on and off the rest of the day too.
2 - Depending on how well your fertilized embies are developing, should determine a 3 day or 5 day transfer. Sometimes they might determine the embryo will just do better in the uterus rather than in the culture in the petri dish. There could be many factors. My last transfer, I was certain they would push me to a 5 day based on how many fertilized eggs I had, but they still did a 3 day. (I think my age played into that too)
3 - You don't really need to rest for a day or two after your transfer. I was off my feet for about 3 days at DHs insistence. My doctor said I could have gone back to work the next day. Just take it easy and don't overdo it.
Good Luck!!!

Re: Question about ER retrieval and transfer
How exciting!!! There is really nothing to nervous about!!
1 - I felt fine after the ER. By the time I left there, I wasn't groggy or tired or anything. I felt a little crampy, a little "twingy" and my ovaries felt heavy, but I only took Tylenol once. I stayed on the couch the rest of the day just to take it easy and by the next day I was up and around. My ovaries definitely felt heavy for a few days afterwards, but honestly, it didn't affect my life at all.
2 - My dr. told me we would be a 3dt...my guess is it depends on your own situation and then on how the fertilization goes. 3dt was exactly 3 days after ER
3 - I only rested the day of transfer, but I was told I didn't have to...I mean, the transfer was barely over and they had me dressed and out of there!!
Really, don't be nervous...don't put any additional stress on yourself!

Re: Question about ER retrieval and transfer
1 - How bad do you feel after the ER? Do you take pain meds? How long do you usually feel pain? I was bloated, pain from the blaoting and like bad Period Cramps. I had slight OHSS so I was in pain for about 5 days but I heard this is NOT the normal experience ....
2 - What is the difference bt 3 day and a 5 day transfer? What determines what day you will go in? How many you retrieve usually determines if they will let some go to 5 day plus teh stage and status on day 3.
3 - Do you usually rest for a day or two after transfer? My RE suggested 2 days of bed rest which I did.
DONT be nervous. Its gonna be ok and over fast and then the real torture begins

Re: Question about ER retrieval and transfer
1) After ER I felt groggy but no pain (both times). Laid on the couch all day and rested.
2) 3dt v. 5dt is up to your RE and # of embryos. I will never have a 5dt, b/c I don't ever get enough to take the risk, but I think a 5dt is better because they reach the blast stage and you have a better idea what may or may not be a good emby. Not that that is full proof. But, its better than at day 3.
3) ET - my current RE tells you to decrease activity and rest that day, but go about normal activity. But I tried to take it easy for 2 more days.
And watch your liquid intake on ET day. I drank too much on IVF#1 and thought I was going to burst. I was afraid to let out some for fear of not stopping it. They always tell you to be there early (at least 1/2 hour) so test your bladder. You should not be bursting just about feel that you could go if you went. That is what I did with IVF#2 and RE said it was perfect.
Good luck and don't worry. ER is easy, you go in, lie down, next thing you know its over. Some have pain and some don't. There was never any blood for me either after ER.
