question about feeding my cat

i have a 2 yr old orange male. he gets about 1 cup of food a day (dry food only).

this cat is driving me nuts. i usually feed him one cup in the morning. he only grazes throughout the day, and by the next morning only half his food is gone, so i "top it off" with a half a cup of food.

some days i won't give him any new food until his old food is gone - but then he looks at me like he is waiting to eat breakfast until there is new food in the bowl.

i would assume i am feeding him too much, and cut it down to 3/4 cup a day, but then why does he meow and "ask" for more food? is he just being picky?

Re: question about feeding my cat

Cats are very habitual creatures.
He may want to eat twice a day- meaning get fresh food in his bowl.
What i do is feed my cat morning and evening. Even if I come home from work and see she still has food in the dish- I top it off- and she thinks it's dinner! Chat Icon
Maybe try giving him 1/2 the food in the morning and 1/2 at night.

Re: question about feeding my cat

Cats always act like they haven't been fed in days, even if there is food in the bowl. I have three cats and they get two cups of dry food (morning) and one can (night) a day. When we get home in the evening they will be running around the kitchen shaking their tails and meowing for food, even if there is some in the bowl.

Maybe you can try giving your cat 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup at night.

Re: question about feeding my cat

I also have an orange cat that does this. I feed him in the AM and would always say "You have food in your bowl, what's wrong" (Yes, I talk to him like he's another child of mine..LOL). He follows me everywhere. Knows where his "treat" cabinet is and his food cabinet is. Just recently, I started to "Top off" at night and it helped a lot. All he wanted was a "top off". He also grazes through the day and I make sure he has fresh water daily as well.
He HATES wet/canned food, so, all he likes is the dry and his treats (I give a couple every AM).
