Question about Femara vs. Clomid?
Can someone explain to me like I am a small child what Femara does and why I took it for 5 days before my IUI?
I don't need to know that it blocks estrogen and that it is a breast cancer drug or anything scientific, but what does it do, like make your eggs grow faster?
I am trying to wrap my head around the IUI and what I did and what everything was for.
Also how come some people take clomid and Dr. B gave me femara? He said clomid can make your lining thin and dry up CM, so why does anyone use it?
Thanks guys! I am naturally curious and like to know what is going into my body and why?

i never used clomid, but saw dr. b and did a cycle with femara. Femara basically does the same thing as clomid as far as increasing follicle growth to induce ovulation. However, femera is supposed to have less side effects like you mentioned than clomid. I think that it is a newer drug in terms of its ferility uses so not everyone is using it yet. Also, they may try someone on a cycle of femera with no response and then try clomid to see if they respond to that or vice versa.

Yes I see Dr. B too. I was just wondering what would have happened if I never took the drugs and instead went in for my sonos, like maybe they would have shown good sized folicles on their own.
Just curious about the process.

Because Femara suppresses your natural estrogen, you are "forced" to make more of it naturally, so I assume the levels are more therapeutic. With Clomid, you make your normal estrogen PLUS whatever the meds cause you to make, so it can be an overproduction of estrogen, which may be why there are more adverse reactions/side effects to Clomid.

Can I ask why you are seeing an RE?
if you don't take any fertility meds, you will likely only have one follicle that produces a mature egg to be ovulated.
Did you trigger as well? The trigger tells your body to release the mature eggs. Otherwise you'd likely produce and ovulate one egg if you do ovulate on your own.

Femara has a black-something label for use other than for breast cancer. It can cause birth defects IF YOU TAKE IT WHILE PREGNANT, but if you are taking it to ovulate, it is out of your system very early on, possibly with-in days of stopping it. Clomid has a much longer half-life, like 45 days.
Some doctors just refuse to use it b/c of the black-label thing. I actually had an RE tell me he didn't use it b/c he never used it in his residency. I was like, get with the program here, things change!!

I see an RE because after 9 months I didn't get pregnant and SA, HSG test and preliminary blood work was all perfect.
I have perfect periods, ovulate and my temping confirms this. So I decided I didn't want to wait any longer.
I am glad I didn't because my CD3 blood work showed a slightly underactive thyroid TSH level which could be preventing it.
I don't know much about it all and this is my first iui, so I hear everyone talking about clomid and getting pregnant on it, so I was wondering why I did get that med because it seems more popular.
I got the trigger shot but when I went for my sono and blood work the day before my iui my hormone surge was high and they said I was going to ovulate within a day, so I didn't have to do the shot.
I had a right follicle at 24, and a few on the left side that were 17, 18, 21 (this was the day before my iui).
Also why I wondered is because I always feel O pain on the left side. Well this time I felt it on the right and that 24 follicle was on the right side, so I wondered if the meds did something different and made me ovulate on the right side?

I do get this because Rite Aid woldn't give me the rx until they spoke with my Dr. They asked my Husband how old I was and he explained what it was for, but they held out until talking with Dr. B.

D b prefers femara. He said it works better. The only reason I took clomid was because my insurance wouldnt cover femara. After just 2 months on clomid, my lining was already getting thinner.
