question about hal higdon marathon training
i think i read that a couple of people here have followed his plan.
how did you like it?
i did the jeff galloway plan to get to the half marathon and i'm feeling i needed more training.
pros? cons? did you use it for your first marathon or for a subsequent marathon?

Re: question about hal higdon marathon training
I followed his program for my first half, just the running part I really didn't cross train. I really enjoyed his program. It helped me get in great shape and I felt well prepared for the race.

Same here, I followed the running part for a half and full marathon, and just continued the classes that I normally take at my gym. I really like his schedules.

Re: question about hal higdon marathon training
i followed it for most of my marathons (6 of them). let me first say that i am not competitive nor do i care about PR's and all that so this plan worked great. for me completing the marathon is my goal. proving i could do it was my goal. i did his beginner one for pretty much all of my marathons b.c i also ran with others that were doing their first so i was happy to continue with it. i found it do-able even with working f/t and having 2 very young children and a DH that works A LOT of long hours. i never felt taxed, never suffered injury and achieved my goal of completion. the only down side runners might find is that it is not seriously challenging. there is no speedwork really built into the beginner plan. it might be too "light" for the serious runner. for me, it was perfect and i do recommend it esp for those first timers who want to finish and show up w/o injury or stress to the starting line. good luck!
ETA that i didn't really cross train either. i was all about running. looking back and now that i do, i wish i had lifted light weights to keep my body more limber. i have recently started Jillian michaels and am amazed and how much better i look and perform while running. it would have helped a lot in those late last 6 miles!

Re: question about hal higdon marathon training
I like the run less run faster program better for the half training, but it's a good one!

i'm starting to understand this!
after three weeks of almost no running, last sunday i had my fastest 10k time! i was FLYING... and by flying i mean a 12-minute-mile... but that's flying, for me

be careful, that isn't a good way to train. you are going to get injured!
the "run less run faster" program isn't about not running for weeks! Its based on 3 running days and 2 cross training days per week.

oh... don't worry. taking three weeks off was not because i wanted to. it was because i was recovering. during that time i was nursing my bum knee and doing everything but running.
i normally run three to four days per week. this time, i'm going to keep up the running and include real cross-training
