Question about hand flapping/arm flailing?
DS is 15 months and has just started to flap his arms when he gets excited...of course being the neurotic mother that I am, I get nervous when I see things like this. It just started, and he always does it when he is really excited.... no other red flags at all... Is this normal toddler behavior???

Re: Question about hand flapping/arm flailing?
Having one "sign" of Autism is far from an indicator. A majority of DC flap their arms when they are excited. Heck, I've seen adults do that as well...

i agree! i'm a speech therapist and have several students with autism/PDD on my caseload. I think the more important "sign" to look for is eye contact, and just general communication and interaction. does he go off in a corner and flap his arms by himself? or is he interactive with you, smiling, etc? it sounds like what hes doing is totally normal, and just his way of showing hes excited my DH still does this sometimes! LOL

Re: Question about hand flapping/arm flailing?
DS did this and still does from time to time when he gets super excited. My ped. is not concerned at all...there are many other signs that would generally accompany it.

Re: Question about hand flapping/arm flailing?
thank you!!!! Like I said, no other red flags at all...his eye contact and everything else is fine. He is extremely social, etc. I am crazy....he just got the MMR shot and then started flapping his arms and I started to get nervous....almost looking for signs. I feel so much better now

If you look for signs, you will always find them, even if they don't exist. Something similar to seeing tons of blue cars if you bought a blue car, or most medical interns diagnosing themselves with every bizarre disease they're currently studying.....
