question about hand me down car seats
How old is too old to take a hand me down car seat?
my niece is 5 or 6
and it is a 5 point harness.....my dh says yes...I say no no no

I thought the general thought was not to use items (other than clothes) that were 5 years or older for safety reasons.

I wouldn't take it. Most carseats expire after 5 years. The plastic gets brittle and won't hold properly.

I don't mess around when it comes to car seats. Personally, I wouldn't take any used car seat. I want to know the entire history of the seat, and have the latest safety features available. I'm all for hand-me-downs, and DC have quite a bit of pre-loved toys, clothes, etc., but not car seats.
5 or 6 years is definitely at the end of the reliable life of a car seat, so I wouldn't take it, even without my paranoia.
