Question about Infants on Amoxicillan
So DD is 16 weeks and has her first ear infection, apparently a severe one.
We started the amoxicillan yesterday. She was prescribed 1 teaspoon twice a day. I must say 1 teaspoon seems like ALOT. I have to drop it in slowly because she doesn't really swallow it right away...she also doesn't seem to love the taste. It takes awhile!!! But if if I go to fast she chokes or spits it out.
Any tricks to get it down easier?
eta: I am squeezing it into the side of her mouth/cheek.

I know! When I went to the pharmacy I heard the pharmacist call the doctor to confirm because I guess her computer told her it exceeds the recommended amount. She even explained to me that she feels its alot, but the doctor confirmed it.
Should I be concerned? The dr did say she "blew out her eardrum" not sure if that makes it more severe or not.
It wasn't my reg ped, it was the on call.

Lay her back a bit and get her to close her mouth with each drop. Are you putting it in a dropper?

Re: Question about Infants on Amoxicillan
When DS was on Amoxicillan for his double ear infection, he loved the taste of it. His ped gave me a syringe to give him 3 ml twice a day. Is that how you are giviing it to her?

Re: Question about Infants on Amoxicillan
Yeah it sounds more severe and that's probably why it's so muhc. I just had to give Ryan 4mL for a double ear infection and it was a lot. He liked the taste. Try to give it to him before she eats, so she's hungry- maybe she'll suck it down.

Re: Question about Infants on Amoxicillan
I recline his high chair back and give it to him,,it goes down easier...
As far as the dosage,,I would call JUST to make sure.
SHe did blow out her eardrum, so that can be the reason!
How is she feeling??

Re: Question about Infants on Amoxicillan
I am giving it to her in the syringe, 1 tsp is equal to 5 ml. Maybe its just too cold.
She doesn't eat solids yet, but I will try to do it right before or in the middle of the bottle.
I don't know how she can like Nutramigen and not pink medicine!! Although I have to say I thought it would smell like bubble gum, it actually has a very medicinal smell.
She doesn't have a fever this morning, but still had a lot of wax dried up in and around her ear this morning. She sleeps on the infected side so I guess it drains out. She's sleepy though.... napping away!!!

Re: Question about Infants on Amoxicillan
I had a hard time giving it to Charlie. It had to be done really slowly. A few times I put it in his bottle with a 1/2 ounce of formula and he took it very well.

Re: Question about Infants on Amoxicillan
Since her ear drum is blown out that is probably why she is getting so much. Definately try giving it to her when he is hungry. We used to give it to DS in the morning as soon as he got up and at night right after his bath.

To get them to swallow blowing in their face works, usually. I read it on another board, and it seems to work....my son thinks it is kinda funny..... I hope your dd feels better soon.

I do that with my dog! I put medicine in her mouth then hold it closed, tip her head back and blow in her face. LOL!!!

Re: Question about Infants on Amoxicillan
DD has had a couple ear infections and medicine has been an issue. But we usually lie her back or recline in the highchair and give it to her slowly with towards her cheek.
The dosage dosen't sound bad, that is typically what DD was perscribed for her ear infections.
Hope she feels better soon.

Re: Question about Infants on Amoxicillan
DS is on Azthromycin for Bronciolitis. First few days were 4ml, now 2ml. But yes, 4ml seems like such a large amt to give a baby. He would throw it up or spit it out. Now with the 2ml, I give it to him right before he gets his bottle on the side of his mouth gently so it goes down easy. Then I offer him the bottle and he forgets about the nasty med. I hope that may help you.

Re: Question about Infants on Amoxicillan
Steven just finished up the same dosage. It's easier to use a dropper thing than the syringe that the pharmacy gives you.
I would lay him down on the changing table or in my arms and slowly give it to him. When I used the dropper, it was so much easier because he would kind of suck on the dropper and it didn't take as long. Also, he didn't lose any of it that way.
