Question about medical insurance

If you're covered under your own health insurance, and your husband's, can you pick which one you want to use? For instance, my plan at my current company is pretty mediocre, but DH has great coverage. Do I have to use mine since it's my primary coverage?

Also, are there usual co-payments for pre-natal visits?

Thanks

Re: Question about medical insurance

I believe in NY they go by the birthday rule - whoever's birthday comes first in the calendar year is the insurance they bill first. So if you are born in Feb. and your husband in Oct., your insurance is billed first and then you can bill DH's as secondary.

I only had to pay a co-pay for my first pre-natal visit to my OB/GYN, and the rest of the visits I don't pay. I do have to pay co-pays every time to the labs or other places I go to for testing.

I think that the only time you have to pay a copay is the first initial visit and when you get a sonogram and go to the labs but for your monthly checkups there is no fee...

Re: Question about medical insurance

there should never be a copay during your prenatal visits. technically the doctor is paid for all of those visits when he/she bills for your delivery. the only instance you can be billed for copays is if you transfer out of one practice and into another. Depending on the amount of visits at the time of your transfer you could be charged a copay for each visit.
