Question about Nassau County new property tax cap
I got my new school tax bill and the increase was way over 2%. I read the document below but I'm hoping someone can simplify it for me I'm wondering how we find out if our school district overrode the cap.

Re: Question about Nassau County new property tax cap
putting a cap on the tax is not the answer. making wise financial decisions is the way to cut the fat and reduce cost. but going in a saying hey this is the cap, figure it out, is taking our schools and turning them into the schools that most people move away from

Re: Question about Nassau County new property tax cap
Our super said that the 2% is only on the day to day operating budget, things like pensions are not included so the taxpayers will see more than 2% increase. Also, it starts with the 2012-2013 school year.

no i think its the other way around. its 2 percent cap for taxpayers but for schools that could translate to less than 2 percent which leads to program and staff cuts

Re: Question about Nassau County new property tax cap
We lived in MA for six years and at the time we were there tax override #6 was on the ballot. The overides were in place for 40 years before they expired so there were overlapping overrides.
It's only going to take a 60% majority to override the cap and since the school votes often pass by more than that I don't see the tax cap doing anything to reduce or control our taxes.

Re: Question about Nassau County new property tax cap
It does not go into effect until 2012-2013 school year.
The new law actually states: It should also be noted that the property tax cap approved by the state Legislature calls for a maximum 2% or rate-of-inflation increase in the tax LEVY, whichever is lower.
The tax RATE is the amount calculated on the individual tax bill. At my district this year it was about 1.9%
The tax LEVY is the total amount of taxes collected by the school district. At my district is was about 1.1%. This is the one that has the 2% Cap.
So, your taxes can in fact increase more than 2% because it is based on the LEVY not the RATE.

The district is allowed to go over the cap for the fluctuating cost of pensions. The community can also override the cap with a 60% majority.
And PP is right: it won't even become relevant until we start paying for 2012-2013 budgets.
