Question about oatmeal for 1st time

I just tried giving Rylan some oatmeal. He was not a happy camper!!!!!! Did you make it the way the box says to? 1 tbsp oatmeal 4-5 tbsp of formula? It seemed sooo liquidy so I made it a little thicker...still very thin though. Should I start with it in his bottle first?

Usually the reaction isn't so much about the taste but the texture. It's all so new for them. Kepp trying...he'll come around and love it...if he seems to not love it...maybe add a little fruit or veggie but give it some time.

Re: Question about oatmeal for 1st time

We gave DS rice cereal first and he did not like it too liquidity so little by little we made it thicker and now with the oatmeal he loves it.

She said to try rice and if it binds him try oatmeal. I figured I would just go straight to oatmeal. I'm going to try rice now also.

Sorry - I meant to say after you give it some time...not right away.

I gave DS sweet potato after a week of oatmeal - not that I am saying to go against your doctor. Just that it's not a bad thing.

Still...stick with it a bit and see if he'll come around. Chat Icon

Honestly I tend to go with what all of the mommies here say more...lol. How old was Lucas when you started cereal/fruits/veggies?

Re: Question about oatmeal for 1st time

We started our DS on rice and oatmeal at 3 months, and then by 4 months old(maybe a week before), we were already introducing fruits(like apples and pears) with his cereal. I found that for us, that worked much better than just the cereal alone. My PED seems much more laid back than alot of the ones I have been reading about on here, and had no problems with us doing this.

Me too! And it was a huge help because my pediatrician was kinda MIA and I never really got things answered (have a new one now) so this board helped a lot.

We started oatmeal at 5.5 months - I skipped rice because I heard it could cause constipation..every child is different but sure enough a few months ago he was sick and I gave it to him...big mistake.

Anwyay...Chat Icon ....so after a week of cereal I decided why not give the sweet potato a try. I mixed some in with the oatmeal and he loved it. Feeding him was so much fun. Chat Icon

Re: Question about oatmeal for 1st time

It's a new taste/texture for them. My DD spit out 99% of the cereal the 1st couple of times. She actually liked it thicker b/c when it was too liquidy she would just let it run out of her mouth. Now we mix it with fruits or veggies and she eats like a champ most times.

At first they are just learning how to eat. They do not know to swallow it so they spit most of it out. My DS spit most of his cereal out for the first 3 weeks. Now he loves his oatmeal and rice cereal without any added fruits or veggies in it. Don't worry soon your DS will be loving his cereal.

How old is DS? I thought he was only like 3 months?Chat Icon

This isn't a flame, but if he is that little then he probably isn't ready yet. We gave it at 4 months and it took a little getting used to.

He's 11 weeks today. The ped told me to try giving him 1 tbsp 2x a day because he eats so much. I have a feeling he's not ready yet but i'm going to try again. I won't force it on him though.

Re: Question about oatmeal for 1st time

Dawn.. I discussed foods with her ped today. She told me to give her 2 tbsp of oatmeal with 1 - 1.5 oz of formula. It was a good consistency, and K ate it all up!
