question about professional references
ok.. so i'm a speech therapist at a school. last week, they told me my contract won't be renewed, so i don't have a job for next school year. i am looking into other jobs, and i'm just trying to think about who to put down as references. this is only my second job out of school. my supervisor at my previous job retired, and i have no contact info for him anymore. at my current job, i work in 2 different schools so i can put the principal at each of those schools down. i also have a "big boss" administrator, but this is her first year in the district, so i haven't worked with her much at all. i know i should have at least 3 references. so would it be ok to put down the 2 principals, and then one of the other speech therapists that i work closely with?? thanks for any advice!

Re: question about professional references
Who decided that you wouldn't get tenure? If it was the principals, I wouldn't put them down. If you're applying for other jobs in the area, they will probably be honest with other principals about why you weren't granted tenure.

i know... thats another thing i'm worried about. but i dno't know who else to put down! i can't just put down all coworkers, right?? i would think other jobs would want to see references from people who i worked FOR, not just who i worked WITH. and i'm not sure about the tenure issue- i think it was more of a budget thing, where they don't want to give it out as easily, rather than anything major i did wrong.... this is sooo tough!!!

Re: question about professional references
You need to ask these people if they will be your references before you list them. Then you will know who is willing to give you a reference.
Most professionals will not agree to give a recommendation unless they are willing to give a good one.

yes... i was going to ask them first. i guess my question was more who i should ask for references? is it ok to have a couple coworkers on there, or should it be all adminstrators/supervisors??
thanks! like i said before- this is only my second job out of school. my first job, they offered it to me after i did an internship, so i didn't need to do any applying or anything, and i had been there doing my internship so they didn't really need any references. and this job i got right away, too (they were desperate to fill the position when i applied). also, my parents own their own business, so i didn't grow up hearing about office "politics" and how to handle these types of situations.

Re: question about professional references
I am not sure about careers in the school systems but for most careers your former bosses can only give your dates of employment. I put down the a$$hat (it is a real word in the dictionary of Phyl) who fired me as a reference and he will give my dates of employment upon written request. If he thinks like it is good fit for me, he will even throw in a few charming words. He will never say a bad word about me because I know something he would love to know. I have only told my DH and the COT this...otherwise it is coming to the grave with me.
I had a 3 month temp position right before 9/11 and that boss will write a 10 page reference for me about what a great employee I was. Even though NYS says she does not have to.

I probably wouldn't ask co-workers on your own level. As someone calling references, I would think the person just asked their friends. How about an AP or department head?

It's common for school positions to call former employers for references, both character and professional.

Re: question about professional references
i don't see anything wrong with two people you worked FOR and one that you worked WITH.
then again, eduaction system politics might be different than what i've dealt with.
best of luck to you

Re: question about professional references
What about your clinical supervisors from when you were in school? A faculty member who knew you well?
