Question about replacing countertops?
DH and I have decided to replace our countertops with granite. After pricing around, we found a place that will do the granite for a great price, but will not remove our old countertop. We have to do it. I know Home Depot and Lowes will remove old countertops b/c they hire outside contractors and charge you double the price. Has anyone else had this problem -- did you have to remove your own countertops?

Re: Question about replacing countertops?
We purchased a countertop through Lowe's but we had to remove the old one first on our own. DH and his dad removed it in a matter of minutes.

Re: Question about replacing countertops?
When we put granite on - my DH took off the countertop that was there. It was really easy.

It was easy? I am afraid that DH will break crack my cabinets, he is not the most handy. lol. But I would rather save the $$ for something else.

Re: Question about replacing countertops?
What about removing the backsplash as well? We have tiles there now. I have no idea how to do that. And I dont think we are going to put granite on the backsplash. We wanted to re-tile.

Re: Question about replacing countertops?
Hmmm...the tile can be done but it has to be done carefully. I think that DH used a crowbar (sp?) to pull off the tiles and then sanded down cement on the wall because he needed a flat surface to retile. That's a lot of work (and messy) but it can be done.
You are right to be cautious about the cabinets and the countertop. I believe the countertops are in place with some type of heavey duty silicone adhesive mixture. As long as you are careful it should be fine.
But if it makes you nervous you should at least get some price quotes on that work. Maybe it would be worth the cost of your peace of mine.

I would have to agree. I'm in the middle of getting this done and they removed my old countertop 123. The backsplash was a different story so I was glad to have a contractor do it so he could prep the walls for the countertop and backsplash.

Re: Question about replacing countertops?
I was nervous about my cabinets also but the counters actually came off very easily.
Not sure about the backsplash. We didn't have one up yet.

Re: Question about replacing countertops?
what type of countertop do you have now? formica? If yes, it's pretty easy to take off. you would need a circular saw to make it easier.
I have never removed tile, but I think if you chip away at the grout you can then pull the tiles off? if there is some sheetrock damage, it may not matter since you are putting up a new backsplash?

Re: Question about replacing countertops?
We used Napoli in Seaford and they removed and took away our old countertops and installed the new one (separate days of course).
Their prices were very good - better than Home Depot, plus more styles and the edging was included in the price (ogee edge I think they call it).
