Question about swimming lessons
My DD has been taking swimming lessons for a month 2x a week and all they have been teaching her to do is float. I cannot sign her up again after this month because we're busy, but I'm wondering at what point do they actually teach the kids to swim? Do all the swim schools start this way with teaching how to float? I've watched lessons for the class above her level too and they're all just floating.

Re: Question about swimming lessons
Back to float is the most important. They do this in my sons class every single time. But they also teach blowing bubbles, and getting them to go under. He is now at the point where he *swims to the steps.

Question about swimming lessons
I teach swimming lessons. Floating is the most important skill. If you can't float, it is very difficult to swim. I usually incorporate blowing bubbles, purring their head under water, and kicking. It's hard to master the arm movements if you can't float.

This is all true. I taught lessons for town of Brookhaven when I was in high school/college. we started at age 3 teaching front and back floats blowing bubbles (or as we called it talking to the fishies) putting your ears in the water (listening to the fishies) ice cream scoops (freestyle arms) and reaching and pulling yourself to the wall. We didn't use bubble floats or shimmies but we did use kick boards.
