Re: Question about the old times(whatever is the old times for you)

I was born in '77 and I remember that a "Mr.T" type van was snatching kids in Brooklyn and Queens back in the 80s. So now everytime I see one I think of that.

I was allowed to ride my back anywhere...practically be gone all day (I would say once I was 10+)....so were all my friends. No one ever worried!

Next you're gonna tell me that I shouldn't go around neighborhoods with this guy looking for a puppy. I guess I lived a sheltered life back in the 80's. I don't recall all of these issues. I grew up in Brentwood BTW.

Re: Question about the old times(whatever is the old times for you)

I would go to the deli and get cigarettes for my mom. No note either. It was late 70's early 80's when I did that. It was waaaay different back then.

(OK, so maybe when it was late 70's I was probably with my older sister, but still...no note.)

No cigarette buying here. When we used to visit my grandmother in Queens my brother and I would be asked to go to the corner deli and buy coldcuts and bread for lunch. We still talk about how "cool" it was we were allowed to walk by ourselves in "the city" (to us it was).

Other Memories:
Outside playing Spud, Soccer, Wiffle Ball, Tag, Hide and Seek and kickball until the steet lights came on and all our moms yelling our names "It's time to come in now".
We;d be back outh the next morning around 9 doing it all over again.
We;d also "switch pools"..We;d start off at one house, swim, take a break, go to another friends, swim, take a break...etc.

Adam Walsh was the big story when I was younger. I was a year younger than he was. I watched the tv movie about that (was probably 8 at the time) and it really made an impact on me.

Re: Question about the old times(whatever is the old times for you)

I used to buy them at the deli when I was 11 (85 cents per pack). No questions asked. This was 1982.

My dad used to send me to the store for his cigarettes. My mom would also send me for a beer every now and then. Wow, I swear, my parents arent degenerates! Chat Icon

My dads friend owned the deli across the street. My dad would cross me over and I would go get cold cuts and bread. Always had to say "put the change in the bag" LOL I remember feeling like such a "grownup" because I went alone. Then the owner of the store would cross me back over the street.

It got a little embarassing though when the owner was STILL crossing me when I was 15!!!!!!!! Chat Icon

Re: Question about the old times(whatever is the old times for you)

I used to go buy cigs for my babysitter when I was in elementery school in the late 80's. I guess the store owners "knew" that kids my age were so young that we couldnt possibly be buying them for ourselves.

Re: Question about the old times(whatever is the old times for you)

Oh I so remember doing that...we lived right behind a deli and from the time I was in 3rd grade I remember getting sent to buy both my parent cigs and no one ever questioning it....there was no note either.

Re: Question about the old times(whatever is the old times for you)

Dare I say I was born in '67 so the old times for me were more in the 70's/early 80's. It's not cigarette related, but I was allowed in 7th grade to roam around with my friends all day in Northport Village or take the Hart bus to the Walt Whitman Mall. I would be gone for hours. I would never let my daughter do that now.

We were also allowed to ride our bikes all over town, stop at 7-11's, etc. - which I still wouldn't let my kids do now at that age either.

This was us too! We'd ride all over on our bikes. We'd go to Friendly's, 711, etc.

We'd just ride for hours and hours, then hang out in different yards playing spud and kickball until dark.

My cousins live in the same neighborhood I grew up in and they TRULY did not believe I was allowed to do these things. Chat Icon

We did this in queens glendale ave ( she lived0 and in wantagh ( we lived)at a gas station or card/lotto store.

Yes, my aunt would send me into the store (Austin Drugs, now CVS) and they'd sell it to me. We're talking 1986.
