Question about unemployment

If I go out on unemployment, who pays me? Does it come from my last employer or does the employer pay some form of unemployment tax which gets funneled through the system?

Also, is the unemployment you receive a percentage of your salary? And what is the max amount time you can collect (I have been working full time for this company for almost 7 years)?

TIA!

Re: Question about unemployment

Unemployment lasts 6 months

It comes from the state and it is a percentage of your former salary. I think your previous employer has to agree to it and they pay some form of tax that allows you to get it.

Re: Question about unemployment

The current maximum weekly benefit rate is $405.

Details on how the rate is determined can be found here.

Although your claim lasts one year (your benefit year), during that time you can only receive 26 times your full weekly rate (or the same amount of money for weeks of partial unemployment).

yes, it lasts a year, BUT you are only paid for 26 weeks (or 6 months) of that calendar year, so if you use six months straight you are done for that year.

correct its 26 weeks mine ended the 24th had i kept it the last 4 weeks... but i decided to get a job instead of enjoying the last of my 'break' .... you can apply for a program where you can collect another 26 weeks but its very backlogged and theres a hgue wait list (its like you take classes type its listed somewhere on the site)

Re: Question about unemployment

I prepare the unemployment tax returns for my job every quarter....

Employers pay unemployement taxes for all employees up to a certain amount (amount differs in each state). This tax is paid every year. So you get paid from the state.

Re: Question about unemployment

How much more does an employer have to pay if someone collects unemployment. What is the added expense for the tax to the employer?? Thanks!

There is no "added expense" for an empoyer when someone collects unemployment. They don't pay the tax after the employee is terminated. The employer pays the tax no matter what for all employees every year up to a certain amount.

In NY employer pay a SUTA (State Unemployment Tax) on the first $8500 of your salary for the year. They pay this tax EVERY year. It does notmatter if the employee has been with the company for 20 years, this tax still has to be paid by the employer.

I don't know the exact percentage off the top of my head because we have multiple locations in different states & each state has different percentages & different calculations.

Oh, ok. I was under the impression that employers rate increased-they had to pay a higher tax rate when employee collects unemployment

No, one person collecting unemployment is not going to raise the rate. The rate is reviewed every year & can change every year. Different companies will have different rates. If a company has a lot of people terminated & then collecting unemployement, then they will have a higher rate than a company that only has a few people collecting unemployment.

ETA: Every year employers should be getting letters from the state telling them if there is any change in the rate.
