Question about used cribs
DH and I just got back from a family party. His cousin offered us a crib to use. Its a nice crib and only five years old, but I read in the baby bargains book that you should never take a used/hand me down crib. DH thinks there is nothing to worry about. Has anyone used or thought about using a used crib? I also don't know if it is rude to refuse? Thanks.

Re: Question about used cribs
5 years is on the border of what I would take. I'd just make sure there are no recalls on it before you take it.

Re: Question about used cribs
I read the same thing you did in baby bargains and agree with the pp. I think I'd be on the fence with on that was 5 yrs old and would probably end up declining as if you want to use it again for another baby, by then it will be even older and there could be newer safety issues with it. With a crib I just think I'd want to start fresh.

Re: Question about used cribs
I personally would invest in an inexpensive new crib that meets all the JPMA standards before I would use a crib that is 5 years old, regardless of who it comes from.
Between recalls, general use and abuse that a crib gets on a regular basis and changing safety requirements etc I wouldn't take the risk, it's just not worth it in my opinion.

Re: Question about used cribs
The two things I think you should never take from others is a crib and a car seat. Especially if it is 5 years old. I would just buy a new one.

Re: Question about used cribs
I think 5 years is a little old for a crib. You can get an inexpensive brand new crib and have no worries. Have you seen the crib yet? You may not even like it!

Re: Question about used cribs
Thanks everyone. This is what I was concerned about, but DH seemed to like the idea. I think he doesn't want to offend anyone. I personally wasn't really crazy about the look of the crib(its made of pewter), but I wasn't sure if I was being a little too picky.

Re: Question about used cribs
You're definitely not too picky. My sis offered me her crib twice and I had no problems saying no both times.
Just tell the cousin that you already have a nursey theme in mind and the crib offered won't match or you had already ordered the nursey furniture set.

No way!! I don't have a problem saying no to people who offer me something I'm not interested in. Don't feel bad!!
If you think a 5 year old crib is bad, I got offered a 50 year old crib.
