Question about using derogatory words
so all this got me thinking, do you think it's ok for a certain group to use derogatory words about themselves but if anyone outside that group says it, it's not?
example: I'm Jewish so only I can say jokes about Jews and big noses
example 2: I'm white so only I can say cracker or whitey
example 3: I'm African American so only I can say "N" or other offensive words

Hmmm....that's a toughy. I use the word "hoe-bag" very often (but in a joking tone), if a guy was using the same word, I would probably be offended.

Re: Question about using derogatory words
That reminds me of the Seinfeld episode when Jerry's dentist converted to Judaism for the jokes.
But I think its just people perpetuating stereotypes.

I guess what I am also saying is that you don't really hear Jews sing about big noses or being cheap LOL and you don't hear white bands sing about crackers. so why do African Americans (and some others too) sing about ho's and "n" and b***hes? it's just seems so wrong IMO!!

Honestly, I think all words are ok. I think it is the intent behind words, or the purpose for them that makes them bad.
If I call DH a cracker (which I do ALOT) I do it to make fun of how he thinks he was born in Alabama, when really he is from Ridgewood....Emily canback this up, she's seen it in action
But to use words as weapons...that is the problem.

Re: Question about using derogatory words
there are always going to be bad words out there- whether to describe a race, or a person in general- fat, trash, stupid, etc.
People say stupid things to other people to make them feel bad every day- it's just the nature of humans..
Do I think it is OK to name call? Of course not- but at the same time- to obsess about all these words gives the words power and the people who use the words power.
If I were a woman on that baskeball team I certainly wouldn't let Imus take away from my success- why would I give him that type of power over me. After all, who is Imus anyway? He's a radio personality.. not God.
People have to stop walking around feeling like victims... they should be taking pity on poor, narrow minded fools that make idiotic comments..
