Question dealing with choosing benefits

I posted this on pregnancy, but this board gets more traffic, so I thought maybe I would get some more advice...

I am not pregnant, but plan on TTCing early next year. My company is having open enrollment, and I have to choose benefits for next year. One plan covers 80% of delivery and associated hospital costs with a $300 co-pay. The other covers 90% with a $250 co-pay.
The cost for the first plan is $60/month for DH and me and the second is $120.

I am not sure which one to choose... I guess if we don't start TTCing till March or April the chances are pretty low I wold be delivering in 2007, but you never know...

Which option would you choose? Oh and the copay for prenatal visits is $15 for option 1 and $20 for option 2.

Re: Question dealing with choosing benefits

Delivery is expensive... could you switch plans after the year is up?

Yes, I can change plans at open enrollment next year for 2008.

Re: Question dealing with choosing benefits

I would go with option 2 just because you NEVER know. What happens if you happen to get PG before the next open enrollment & have to deliver in 2007

You are only talking about $60 more a month for option 2 but seems you are covered more

I would go with the first plan since it costs less per month and the co-pay is only a $50 difference.

Re: Question dealing with choosing benefits

this is naive- but how much is delivery?

you'd be spending an extra $720 for the year if you choose option 2- if the 10% difference that you'd be saving on your delivery is more than $720, i'd go for it.

in conclusion, if delivery is more than $7200, it's worth going for option 2

sorry- number cruncher here ;)

Total delivery can be upwards of 20,000, so with option 2 she would save 2,000 on the delivery.

Option 2 is better IMHO

yes, I am trying to figure this out. I have no idea, and I am sure it is probably more for a c-section than a normal delivery.

Also, regarding life-changes - I think the BIRTH of a baby is a life change, but not pregnancy.

Re: Question dealing with choosing benefits

I would go with the more coverage option. I didn't have any options with mine but I thjink its a pretty chintzy plan. You also have to think about the drug plan. Some of the drugs I have needed lately are not ocvered though my insuarnce and I paid 180 the first month I used them.

I do not think the co-pay is the difference, it is the fact that if she gets pregnant, under the 1st plan, she will have to shell out 20% of the hospital bill as opposed to 10%....

IMHO, no brainer, 2nd plan

I agree. Go with #2. a 10% difference in delivery is potentially a lot!!

Well that does make sense if the delivery is $20,000. I had a c-section and the doctor billed my insurance company $5,500.

But what about the hospital charges?

I don't remember any other charges. My insurance covers 100% of hospital charges. They also covered the entire $5,500. Would the 10 or 20% of her coverage be just for the delivery or for ALL hospital charges?

I believe it would be all hospital charges, from what I hear, they can rack up....Chat Icon

I really do not remember that much in hospital charges. The highest number I remember seeing was the $5,500 for the surgery, which is why I recommended option 1. If they really are as high as everyone else says, then I agree that option 2 is better. Chat Icon
