Question for Elementary Teachers from a HS Teacher
Ok, so I am clueless on the elementary end.
I just got my daughter's KG list.
1) Please explain to me the purpose of the "thick" pencils? My daughter has been writing with the normal pencils since she was 3, and writes just fine.
2) White board markers?
3) Baby wipes and tissues?
I usually have to buy my own supplies especially white board markers. The school doesn't supply tissues? All the schools I have been in had tissues - I guess I was spoiled?
These are just items on the general list - we will get a teacher specific list in August.

Re: Question for Elementary Teachers from a HS Teacher
my school doesnt supply ANYTHING- not tissues, chalk, markers, staples, nothing. i have heard of teachers asking kids to bring that stuff in in the beginning of the year to help offset the cost of all the other things the teacher will have to provide throughout the year.. maybe that's why?

Yup! I teach in queens and we are given very little so we ask students to bring in ziplocks, tissues, wipes, markers etc...
The fat pencil thing I dont get, that should only be used by kids who may need that aid.

Will I be the pain-in-the-butt mom if I send her in with normal pencils, especially since she can write?

Re: Question for Elementary Teachers from a HS Teacher
When I taught pre-school, we used to teach them to write their letters using broken, fat crayons in order to help children learn to correctly hold a writing tool.
When I taught K, we used golf pencils to help them get used to holding the pencil correctly. It's easier to use the smaller pencils to do this, and we used Handwriting Without Tears in the classroom, so it may be part of the handwriting program the school uses.

Re: Question for Elementary Teachers from a HS Teacher
DS's K teacher recommended thick pencils and/or golf pencils to us too, but he was having trouble writing.
As for tissues - most schools provide them, but they are sand paper. Even as a HS teacher, I would offer 5 extra test points for bringing in a box of tissues.

1.) Like others already said, thick pencils, broken crayons, golf pencils all help students learn proper grip...but usually as an intervention if there's a problem (I teach K). I don't ask students to bring in special pencils or crayons...I supply them if needed b/c I'd get a million thick pencils from all the kids that I don't really need.
2.) White board markers, a lot of times, are HUGE in primary grades. I have a 4 pack on my supply list.
3.) We always need baby wipes and tissues. My district doesn't give us any tissues...and if they did, they'd probably be just as bad as the non-absorbant paper towels we have. They don't supply baby wipes either and they are great for cleaning up tables after crafts...and cleaning the kids

Re: Question for Elementary Teachers from a HS Teacher
I work in Queens as well and given very little. We also ask for tissues, paper towels, computer paper for copies etc...
My hubby (who works with the younger grades) says they use the thick pencil because they don't have the tactile development to write with a regular pencil so it helps them get the fine motor skills they need... If your child knows how to write already however, I don't see the big deal in sending her with a regular pencil??

Re: Question for Elementary Teachers from a HS Teacher
A lot of the time they will pool supplies and share everything. I learned that when I sent in cute little personalized pencils, which everyone at her table used.

Re: Question for Elementary Teachers from a HS Teacher
wipes bc kids are MESSY esp the young ones......I teach 2nd and te amt of wipes we go through is insane. I ask for tissues too bc alot of times the school runs out....and to be honest, the tissues are so crappy in school that as a parent, I wouldn't even blink an eye to send in tissues esp in the cold months when everyone has runny noses. White board marker are used to practice everything with writing...we use them almost daily

Re: Question for Elementary Teachers from a HS Teacher
I teach at HS and we are provided with dry erase markers, but not tissues. I ask students to bring in a box for extra credit; some bring it in, others don't.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Those general lists are usually for the whole class to use, hence the large pencils.

Re: Question for Elementary Teachers from a HS Teacher
although we get wipes and tissues from the office, we go through an INSANE amount. the kids are always wiping their noses and hands and we want to keep things clean. you can never have too many, and the office won't supply extra even if we need it. during the winter, we might go through 2 boxes each day if a lot of kids have colds!!
white board markers are used for everything. each kid has his/her own board to use and we have big ones for the class. she will be using them a lot.
as for pencils, i don't know the teacher's reasoning. when i taught K, i used regular pencils. maybe email her and ask her?
most classes pool their supplies so just buy generic--not glitzy or fancy. those are usually a distraction to kids anyway, so even if they aren't pooled, i would stay away from them.
