Question for experienced bfing moms...Please advise

My ds was bf for a year and I never remember worrying about my suppy after the first few weeks, but my dd is different.

My dd is now 7.5 months old and maybe 19 lbs (she is due to be weighed on thurs & its been 6 wks since last weighinso I am not sure) She has never been a very big eater. She weighed 9lbs 4 oz at birth so she could have been a lot bigger by now. Anyway with my peds advise I only feed her two meals a day. She nurses a lot in the morning and then 2 more times throughout the day. Then before bed she nurses again, but lately it seems she is not getting enough before bed. I have missed a few nightime feedings.

At night she starts pulling away, grunting and acting annoyed. Do you think she is not getting enough? DO you think if I supplement at night with a bottle of formula rather than nurse and don't pump my supply will continue to diminish or will it just stabalize so that I can nurse her at all the other feedings, but skip the night? What sdo you think? Has anyone done this?

I would like to continue to nurse for 4 more months.

My dd was 8.13lb when she was born and now at 9 months she is 19.2lbs and my doctor never said anything about her weight gain.

It sounds like she is eating a lot durning the day and might not be that hungry anymore at bedtime. DD did this to me too around the same age. She use to nurse for a good 20 minutes and now she is down to about 10.

All peds are different, but my daughter did not gain any weight in a 10 day period once so therefore there was concern.

Actually, I think she is hungry at night cause if I just put her down she gets hysterical, but if I feed her a 4 oz bottle after nursing she goes right to sleep. Thanks tho. I guess what I really want to know is, if I just give her a bigger bottle at night and skip nursing will I lose too much of my supply?

DS is going through the same thing too. I think it's due to his teeth coming in and him having different feelings in his mouth. As for your supply, if it's a big concern, I'd pump after. Or, if you don't want to pump I don't think it's too big of a deal. Chat Icon

I would pump if you give her a formula for her night time bottle. Otherwise your supply will go down. If you pump enough, eventually you will be able to give her pumped milk Chat Icon

I agree pumping after BF her would be the only way to build/maintain your supply to replace the formula bottle

My DD is 8.5 months and I am having a similiar issue where it seems some nights she needs more after BF, I have been giving her 2-3 oz of formula, I dont pump at that time but I know that eventually it will affect my supply

Just for reference my DD was born at 7 lb 15oz, and at 8.5 months is 18 lbs 12oz. So I think your DDs weights sound ok.

Just to reference also my son was breastfeed up until 6 months at his 9 month appt he weighed 18 pounds and some change. His doc says his weight is just fine and he sees no problem with it.

DS is 7 mo also & I just started to give him 4oz of pumped milk or formula before he goes to bed.

He was waking up soon after going to sleep & has stopped since getting the extra 4oz

Thanks for all your responses. I guess I will have to drag out the pump again.
