Question for Parents who use Day Care
I'm expecting, due in July, and researching day care centers. A couple of the places I'm interested in do not administer medication. I'm wondering how much of an issue that really is and if I should make it a deciding factor. So I guess my question is - Was is a deciding factor for you? And if your day care center doesn't administer meds how do you get around that? I teach and would probably pick up the baby around 4 each day if that makes a difference. Any opinions are really appreciated - I'm so overwhelmed!!!!!

Re: Question for Parents who use Day Care
Mine doesn't and it really wasn't ever a problem - if he needed to be on something for an extended period of time, I'd ask the MD to prescribe a twice a day med - morning and night.

Mine doesn't either and it's really not an issue. I think that's the norm but I'm not certain.

Re: Question for Parents who use Day Care
Mine doesn't either and Jules is on meds three times a day. I put her midday dosage in the bottle and put less milk in that bottle so to make sure she drinks it all. I label that bottle as her midday bottle. No one's given me a problem about it (and the ped said it was okay to put the meds in the bottle).

Re: Question for Parents who use Day Care
My daycare does, but I honestly didn't even take that into consideration when researching places. My kids have only been at the daycare for 4 months, but I have never had to have them give DC's meds.

Re: Question for Parents who use Day Care
Mine does and for us it was an issue. It was not a not an issue when we booked the daycare but ended up being one later. My DS had a febrile seizure at home once due to a fever spike. His pedetrician told us that he needed to have motrin whenever he had a fever. The ped wrote a letter and Daycare has it on file and whenever he has a fever at daycare...they immediately give him motrin and call me. Daycare is close to our home and it could be 30 minutes for me to get him from work so we needed them to be able to give him medication.
My nephew also had a peanut allegry and his daycare would not keep an epi pen there in case of an emergency. That would make me very nervous. He ended up switching daycares.

I think it's something that is hard to predict if you will really need it or not but it was a huge selling point for me.

mine doesnt either, I dont think most do as its a HUGE liability for them. Mine will give tylenol but ONLY with a Drs note. Its never ever been an issue though.

Re: Question for Parents who use Day Care
My daycare does not administer medication. I think that it is to protect them against any potential lawsuits. DD was sick and on antibiotics twice while in daycare and her doses were just "off" those days.

Re: Question for Parents who use Day Care
DS was in daycare for 4 days & ended up getting pneumonia. He needed to be on a nebulizer every 4 hours. I stayed home with him a week & half. He was showing improvement, but needed to continue the neb treatments in daycare. I work nearby so if by chance the daycare was unable to administer the meds I would have been able to do it, but thankfully they could do it. I personally think it's important.

Re: Question for Parents who use Day Care
Not a deciding factor for me...if DS is so sick that he requires medication I am usually home with him. Otherwise I tell the doctor in advance that he can only have it twice a day (morning and night) if possible. I don't like anyone giving him medicine but me or DH.

Re: Question for Parents who use Day Care
My DC does have people who can administer meds, but I told them I prefer that they don't. So, administration of meds was actually a drawback for me. To me I would be scared having someone else give my baby medication in the event there is a reaction or if they give too much. DS is on Zantac, but we give it at home.
Most DC facilities will call you if baby is sick. I would pick one within reasonable distance so you can get to them quickly. If your DC requires meds on a regular basis, you can see if they will allow you to add to his bottle if it is definitely something you cannot just administer at home.

Re: Question for Parents who use Day Care
Mine administers medication. I didn't think much about that at the time we chose the center, but I'm glad we have that option. When DS gets his shots, I'm able to bring in Tylenol just in case he has a reaction. They never needed to use it though. When DS had bronchiolitis, he needed to be on a nebulizer every 4 hours. He was home for about a week, but when he went back, they were able to administer the treatments. All of his other medication has just been given before and after daycare.

Re: Question for Parents who use Day Care
When my kids are sick I usually give them medicine BEFORE they get to daycare and at night so it is rarely a problem
