Question for those who have moved out of state

What kind of reaction did you get from your families? We only moved to NJ, but the reaction from the ILs has been less than positive. Chat Icon

Re: Question for those who have moved out of state

When we put our house up for sale in June of '06 our plan was to move to Jersey because my DH was going to take a job their. My mother was not supportive at all and was very upset and hardly talked to me for a month. Everytime she called me she would be all choked up. Then DH decided not to take the job and we said we were still moving but to queens but he was still working in the city and he couldnt take the commute anymore. In feb. he left his company that he was working for and started a company with 3 othe people in Jersey and that is why we are moving their now. His family has been very supportive. My dad knows and I think he is upset but will not tell me and I still have not told my mom and I close june 25th on the new house Chat Icon . I am so scared because of her reaction the last time. We plan on telling her this weekend when we go their for dinner.

I came to the conclusion that we have to do what is best for my family now (dh, me, ds and soon dd). I was letting their feelings get in the way of making the right the decsion.
Like you said it is right over the bridge so they will just have to deal with it.

Re: Question for those who have moved out of state

my family was all for it since they knew that we would never have a real life or a shot at living comfortably with kids if we stayed in NY.

DH family understood, but MIL was not thrilled.....2 of her 3 kids are now in GA but they will soon follow

My in-laws are sorry to see us go, but they understand and respect all of our reasons for doing so. They are completely supportive.

Re: Question for those who have moved out of state

Mine still think we are moving back. They can't come to terms with it. My father still calls to tell me what houses in the neighborhood are up for sale.

My brother is still in HS up there. I have a feeling they will follow us.

My family is all over though. We are in NC. Sister in Philadelphia(she went away to school and never moved back)
Brother in France(he went for the year)
Sister in Yosemite(she went to school in Boston, but during summers worked in forests and fell in love)
Sister going to school in Asheville.
Two at home with my parents.

We are all getting together this summer in Yosemite. We rented a huge cabin. Chat Icon

Sorry Lisa that you have this added pressure. Chat Icon Don't let it ruin your excitement you need to do what's best for you and your family...its not like you are across the country or that you never visit.

Re: Question for those who have moved out of state

We are in the process of moving to NJ. it doesn't really matter to my family, bc LI is already away from home for me. DHs mom is sad, she thinks we are moving very far away, which is not the case.....but she will be okay. where in nj are you? we are moving into essex county

we're in middlesex now, but we're moving to mercer next month. the thing is we've been here for 3 years already, but i guess since our first home was just a townhouse they didn't feel like it was as permanent as a house. compared to so many people who move across the country, i don't feel like nj is that big of a move.

Re: Question for those who have moved out of state

My parents were very supportive when I moved to NJ...it's not that far and they come often. However, DH and I have talked about moving to FL...and my parents are not very happy with that decision. My mom said she would never stop us, but she is upset about it. That Jewish mother's guilt thing stinks Chat Icon DH says we have to do what we think is best, but I feel like I will never see my parents/sister/brother if we make the move...so I'm torn on what to do. DH's parents...doesn't matter to them where we live!
