Question for those that have moved long distances...
DH and I are moving to CO from VA on Tuesday. The movers are telling us that it could take them 5 - 11 days to get our stuff to us!!! Is this normal? We've only done local moves before....

Yes it is normal for it to take that long. They have other people's stuff on the truck, so they can have other stops to pick up and drop off before they get to you. Good Luck with your move!!

Re: Question for those that have moved long distances...
DH and I had planned on taking a week off of work to get everything put away and all the house stuff settled. Now most of the week will be a waste - we'll be sitting in an empty house waiting for our stuff to show up! Guess I'll be spending a lot of time shopping for furniture and working on my baby registry

My mom moved to Florida and I think it took between 1-2 weeks for the moving trucks to get there.

Re: Question for those that have moved long distances...
How much are you moving -when I moved to MI I moved a one bedroom apt (bedroom, livingroom, dining room etc) and so we did not take up a whole truck. Then you have to wait for another load going in the same direction. Moving back we had the same deal but more stuff as DH's was added and now it was a two bedroom place we were moving.
Going it was supposed to take 10 days I didn't get my stuff for I think 20 or so. Coming back to NY - I think it was promised for 5-8 and it came in 8.
One BIG question to ask if you are not going to take up an entire truck (btw we were put onto a truck with someone who was moving from a house so the other person had a lot of stuff) is: 1) will my stuff be moved from truck to truck 2) will my stuff end up at any point in storage.
If you use united be prepared for a mayflower truck etc. Many of the large companies are now combined and so you might end up with another company.
Let me know if you have any questions since I did two of these moved within a 2 year period I might be able to answer questions. OH BIG one - check your estimates THROUGHLY. Some companies gave us bonded estimates - but Left off (we think purposefully) one or two large items. One company left off our bed, another one of our couches, another company our entertainment center. If it is bonded they are not supposed to charge any more for the move IF it ONLY what was labeled on the estimate. So by leaving off a major item it throws off the weight so they will claim you didn't say you were taking that item and so now they can charge more - and what will you do at that time - with all your stuff packed and the movers standing there.
Sorry this is so long but my family has moved a few times over the years and so I have a lot of experience in moving and the hassels it entails.
