Re: Question for those who work in the IT industry
Is it possible? Oh yes, absolutely.
There are various ways to tell. Free programs that you can download and use, even.
Then there are systems like Websense which can block certain types of sites, and also does monitoring.
I think it depends on the size of the company and the culture - if it's an environment where the time spent surfing or playing games is counter-productive. Or if they just don't trust you.

Re: Question for those who work in the IT industry
They sure can. My company is very small and they track the sites you go to and how long you are on them. Many people in my company go to various sites such as CNN, MSNBC, Foxnews or their bank accounts max 5 min, but if you're victorias secret or fredericks of hollywood all day shopping, that's a problem.
Since I was good friends with the former IT guy he actually showed me how the websites are monitored. Each computer has a seperate IP address. The monitoring system monitors which links/urls/sites each IP went too and how long they were on that site. For example one person went to a site by accident. She forgot a letter and it brought her to a porn site. She was on it for less then 10 seconds. Obviously when IT looked at that they saw ok it was an error, but if she was on the site for 45 minutes then their would have been a problem.
IT also has a tap on all the computers. They can log into your computer and you not know it. This gives them the remote access to your computer if they need to fix something, update something or see what you are doing. Since I was friendly with IT they filled me in on the secret of how I can tell if they are on my computer remotely
