Re: question: Midwife vs. Doctor

I use a midwife. Midwives have lower c-section, episiotomy, forceps, tearing etc. than OBs do. They promote natural childbirth, but they don't discourage epidurals (if that is what you want)

If you are a low risk woman, you have a better shot at a vaginal delivery with a midwife than with an OB.

Re: question: Midwife vs. Doctor

I used an OB for my first & a midwife for the second. I will never go back to an OB. Midwives are generally much more naturally minded. They have lower rates of intervention & lower c-section rates. I found the care throughout my pregnancy to be much more personal than with an OB. When it came to labor & delivery the differences were HUGE. Feel free to FM if you want more info. After my experiences, I truly believe in midwives.

Re: question: Midwife vs. Doctor

All the reasons above are the reasons why I chose to use a midwife. I worked in a mother baby unit, and have never been impressed with OB's, so it is a personal preference.

ITA, I'm an L&D nurse and I've worked with OB's that I wouldn't want delivering my cat. I have always been a fan of midwives and am so happy with my decision to seek care with one for this pregnancy.

Part of the reason for the rate difference is that midwives also generally do not take high risk patients. I agree that OB's are quick to use a knife, but that's not the only reason for the difference so I just wanted to note that.

Also, I personally like having more frequent sonograms, blood work, etc. - I have health issues and it's my first and I find it relaxes me to know more often that everything's OK and to have those regular checks and peaks. Also, OBs can be very personal and good - you just have to find a good one and I really like mine a lot and never feel rushed or like a number.

MIdwives can perform all the same blood work and sonos as an OB and makes sure everything is going along with the pregnancy accordingly.

I'm glad you found an OB you are comfortable with but generally midwives provide more personal care and have longer appointment times/visits.

Re: question: Midwife vs. Doctor

you really can't make generalizations about how "most" OBs are. you have to pick the type of care that YOU want based on your personal preferences.

my OB is very patient and kind--i've had appointments that lasted 25+ minutes of just talking--not counting the exam, sonos, etc. my OB doesn't rush anything or anyone--ever. everything i say is taken seriously. nothing is trivialized. i'm fortunate to have found him.

my OB had to use forceps after i pushed for 5 hours. he would have let me push for 5 more hours--no talk of a C/S whatsoever as long as baby and i were okay. he had to use forceps because it turned out DS had an unusually short cord and couldn't come down the birth canal even with my OB's hands all the way up into the canal. so whether i had a midwife or OB, the outcome would have remained the same--either forceps or emergency C/S or baby wasn't coming out!

i hate reading generalizations about OBs--they're not all uncaring, unpersonal people who rush you through a visit. if yours is that way, find another one. mine has NEVER tried to convince me of anything and talks to me like i'm his daughter--explains everything he does and asks permission for everything. and i feel like i know him personally (i'm on my second pregnancy)--i know all about his family life because he is very open and friendly.

so go with a midwife if you find someone you like. but don't not choose an OB because you think they won't give you the same level of personal care. there ARE OBs out there who are just as personal as any midwife. just like i'm sure there are midwives and OBs who are not that personal.

I didn't see anyone saying they only go with a midwife because of the more personalized care. The fact remains that midwives have lower intervention rates than OBs, and that is why they're appealing to many people. You have a much lower chance of having interventions if you're seeing a midwife.

i wasn't trying to say people only go to a midwife for personalized care. what i'm saying is go to who YOU feel comfortable with--like i said, regardless of whether i had a midwife or OB, i would have needed medical intervention. i had a typical low risk pregnancy so i guess my intervention added to my OB's "intervention rate" even though it was beyond his or my control. i had the most boring pregnancy on earth but the craziest birth story ever! Chat Icon

people are saying that you CAN get more personalized care with a midwife, and my point was that there are OBs out there who are just as personal, and are NOT eager to use interventions for no reason. so i don't want people thinking you won't get an intervention with a midwife, or you will get one with an OB. you just can't generalize because every doctor is different, every woman's body is different and every pregnancy is different.

i'm very open to midwives and think they serve a great purpose. but you can get equal care with a great midwife or a great OB--just pick who you like and don't solely go by generalizations or statistics. Chat IconChat Icon

I didn't say midwives couldn't do those things, but I've noticed a stylistic difference in the frequency. My friends who have used midwives have had very few sonos and limited bloodwork because midwives are less into intervention of all kinds - whether it's a sono or a c-section - and that makes sense to me because it's consistent with their philosophy, and I think it's great for some people but I don't mind the extra intervention and I find it rather comforting to get fairly frequent sonos, extra bloodwork, etc. I think it really depends on personal preference and also that there are some great OBs out there.
