Question re: AFP results

My gf just got her results for her AFP and they were 1 in 200 (she's 38). She has an amnio scheduled in 4 weeks and her OB advised her to go ahead and have the amnio (he would have liked to see a number closer to 400+).

Does anyone know what the statistics are for her age? (I can't remember what mine were exactly, but I thought it was 1 in 200 when I was 37 and my results were 1 in 280)...

TIA!

Re: Question re: AFP results

I was debating on whether or not to get this test b/c of the high false-postiive rate, but I went and got it done this week at 18 wks. I hope it comes back ok. What are the best results for this test anyway?

Now that I think about it, someone told me once that the reason so many people get a false-positive is b/c you generally get the test done at 16 wks, however, while you may have guestimated the due date and conception date, you can still be off and before 16 wks. the tests aren't as accurate. Supposably they are more accurate 16 wks. and after.

Re: Question re: AFP results

Here's the chart I was looking for. In my gf's case, risk of DS is 1/175 (very close to her results) and 1/102 for other chromosomal abnormalities.

RISK OF HAVING A LIVEBORN CHILD WITH DOWN SYNDROME OR ANOTHER CHROMOSOMAL ANOMALY

The 1st column is Maternal Age, 2nd is Risk of Down Syndrome and 3rd is Total Risk for Chromosome Abnormalities

20 1/1667 1/526
21 1/1667 1/526
22 1/1429 1/500
23 1/1429 1/500
24 1/1250 1/476
25 1/1250 1/476
26 1/1176 1/455
27 1/1111 1/455
28 1/1053 1/435
29 1/1000 1/417
30 1/952 1/384
31 1/909 1/384
32 1/769 1/323
33 1/625 1/286
34 1/500 1/238
35 1/385 1/192
36 1/294 1/156
37 1/227 1/127
38 1/175 1/102
39 1/137 1/83
40 1/106 1/66
41 1/82 1/53
42 1/64 1/42
43 1/50 1/33
44 1/38 1/26
45 1/30 1/21
46 1/23 1/16
47 1/18 1/13
48 1/14 1/10
49 1/11 1/8

**** Keep in mind that AFP is only a screening test. There are alot of false positives associated w/ it (which I *thought* was more accurate when done at the end of the 1st tri ~ Wk12).

Thanks!
