Question RE: Furniture in your first home?
I may be jumping ahead of the game a little bit - (if everything pans out with the home we are accepted on)
How long did it take you to furnish your first home?
We would be moving from a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, living room and kitchen apartment to a 3 bedroom, 2 livingroom, 2 bathroom, kitchen, diningroom.. with a deck ...
we would be lacking furniture for the 3rd bedroom, 1 livingroom, the diningroom, the outdoor furniture, we would need to buy SD all new furniture for her bedroom, probably a smaller dinette set for the kitchen... I know rome wasn't built in a day - I am just curious how long it took everyone about...

Re: Question RE: Furniture in your first home?
When I purchased my home in January I needed a dining room set, bedroom set (our old set went to the guest bedroom) and half a living room set. Right away we finished up the living room and got the dining room table. We just last weekend ordered the master bedroom set. Furnishings aside, we STILL have to decorate the dining room, guest bedroom and master bedroom (curtains and all) and trust me the small things really do add up.
I would just furnish what you need right away and gradually finish up on the spare rooms and decor as you go.
Good luck with the house

Re: Question RE: Furniture in your first home?
It was easy for us because we moved into an apartment - we had a lot of junky stuff before that we sold or threw away and didn't move with.
I would just take it one room at a time. Don't waste money on filling every room with low-quality furniture, which can be expensive sometimes and add up quickly. I would wait and when you can afford it, buy what you really love, you will have it for years and it will be worth it in the long run.
Also, look on craigslist - I found an awesome crate and barrel coffee table for $150 (over 500 in store) and really nice pottery barn shelves that I almost bought in store....you might be able to mix and match and save some money.
Check out walmart and kmart for outdoor stuff - they have a lot of affordable options.
Good luck!!! congratulations on your new home. Enjoy the process!!

Re: Question RE: Furniture in your first home?
We kept the spare bedroom bare until DS came home so it was 3-4 years. Actually we are still buying things here and there.

Re: Question RE: Furniture in your first home?
we plan on tossing a ton of stuff when we move out of apartment or moving it into the "new" house whenever that will be for temp. Garage sales, estate sales, everything else sale will be how we do things and saving up to do one room at a time. I am finding through my friends who purchased homes - if they did things too fast and didn't live in the space they all regretted their decisions.

Re: Question RE: Furniture in your first home?
Thanks everyone - We are going to finish SD's room first and then the guest bedroom (what better way to have family come and help paint/carpet/etc - esp if they have a nice room to stay in ) - Everything else will fall into place in due time Thanks again!

Re: Question RE: Furniture in your first home?
We have been in our home over a year and the only stuff we bought so far was our master bedroom set and baby furniture. Everything else has been donated from friends/family until we can afford to do other rooms. Our IL's bought us our deck furniture for a housewarming gift, but they gave us their old grill.

Re: Question RE: Furniture in your first home?
We are in our house 4 years in August & we finally have all the rooms complete. The bedrooms though will be ever changing depending on the kids we have.
When we first moved in, we concentrated solely on our bedroom, kitchen & living room. We took a lot of handmedown stuff from family members to fill other rooms like our dining room & office. Slowly once the "main" rooms were done, we started to piece the other rooms together. I am a firm believer though to live in your house & then purchase furniture bc you learn very quickly the things that work & don't work!

Re: Question RE: Furniture in your first home?
We've been there for 6 months, we still have two bedrooms and a living room to furnish. We also need patio furniture. Hopefully by next year we'll be done furnishing the whole place, because we get a lot of visitors.

Re: Question RE: Furniture in your first home?
We'll be in our home 3 years in January and we have new furniture in all our rooms now. The last room to be done was the LR - we got new couches last August, just shy of the 2 year mark. We got a new kitchen set in March, just after the 2 year mark.
We moved in and had a full BR set and hand me downs for the other rooms and little by little we replaced them.
