questionable situation at daycare yesterday
WWYD ?
A handful of times when I picked up DD from daycare there was a random older child in the room, not near the children usually sitting by themselves having snack or something.
I'm pretty laid back, this never really bothered me. Figured something came up and that is why he was in there.
Yesterday, I go in there is a 11 year old (approx) dancing around entertaining the kids in the highchairs. Teachers are there. She tells me how she loves putting bows in Julia hair. She takes out her camera and shows me pics of Julia and other children in the classroom. ALOT of pics. There was also a pic of a young boy (maybe around the same age) holding two of the babies in a chair. This obviously wasnt a random day occurence.
I was by this. I walked out & this bothered me all day.
Now this is the infant room (6 weeks - 1 year). Am I correct, that according to New York State Law NO other children are to be in the infant room at any time ????
I dont know if these are kids from their summer camp that skip trips or if these are children of a teacher or something.
I love the daycare, Julia adores her teachers and is doing so well. But now I'm wondering .......
WWYD? confront the teacher ? confront the director ?
I want to know who these kids are and what exactly they are doing in here.
Thanks

I don't know about this at all:

but it's worth looking into. I would speak with the director about it.
When DS was in daycare, very often he would go into either the infant room or the older toddler room in the early mornings and late afternoons so they could consolidate classrooms, especially if a teacher or floater needed to leave. Since they were always well supervised it never bothered me to have him in a room with older kids. However, I think that there is a BIG difference between that and having 11 year olds in the infant room, which is not what you signed up for - it would be a different story if this was in in-home daycare with just one room.
And why are these kids taking pictures of the babies without the parents' permission?

i would definitely speak to the director. i would expect ONLY the teachers of the daycare to hold and care for my son. They are liable to what happens to him.
Did you approve picture taking? I know I signed something allowing it when I signed him up for daycare.

I would definitely ask who the kids are - you can do it in a nonconfrontational way...I'd maybe just say "I was confused the other day when I saw those older kids, because I thought that this room was just for 6ms-1yr...are they in here all the time?" and then based on her response you could ask what they're doing there, etc.
I definitely wouldn't let it go - the part where the boy is holding 2 babies is what really bothers me. No one should be holding the babies other than a licensed teacher!!! That is SUPER negligent of the center.

Re: questionable situation at daycare yesterday
I would speak with the director. The infant A and infant B rooms are together in the mornings and late afternoon b/c there's not a lot of kids. There's not much of a difference in that age. Infant A is 3 mons to about 12 mons and now Mason is in Infant B, which goes to about 19 - 24 mons.
I would be conserned with older kids in the room that don't need to be in there. Sure it's cute they want to see the babies, but all the time! Not necessary.

That's what I thought! Some parents are COMPLETELY against this.
I found this rule on NYS daycare licensing requirements : (g) Children under three years of age may not participate in mixed age groups except that for limited periods of time at the beginning and end of the child day care center's daily operation, toddlers may be in a group with preschoolers. Infants may never be placed in mixed age groups.

Print that out and bring it to the director. This is something that absolutely must be addressed ESPECIALLY if the older kids are playing with and holding the babies. Good luck, I know I get knots in my stomach when I have to address issues like this

Re: questionable situation at daycare yesterday
I would definitely ask.
I would also feel bad for the older kid stuck in the baby room all day and that would concern me for when my own child is older.
In any case, I would find out what it is about.
Also, I signed a waiver saying it is okay to take pictures of my child but that is for the staff, not other kids, etc.

Re: questionable situation at daycare yesterday
i know my daycare's policy is that any older sibling is allowed to visit their younger sibling but they have to mind the rules set by the younger rules- taking shoes off, walking slowly and carefully - i think it is cute - they will help a younger sibling with a bottle -
but if there is not a sibling - i don't understand - i know there is a relationship they get with their teachers and want to visit but there should be limits on what they can do - i would definetly talk to the director

That's a good point, I'll ask if they are a sibling.
But they still shouldn't be holding other babies. I know that boy in the pic holding Julia was not related to her. Unless my husband isnt telling me something

Re: questionable situation at daycare yesterday
At our daycare, the teachers' children are sometimes around in the afternoons in the summer when they don't have school. That doesn't bother me too much, but what stands out to me in your story is the picture taking. I would NOT be ok with this.

Re: questionable situation at daycare yesterday
IMO its one thing if they are dancing around entertaining the kids and another if they are holding them or caring for them in any way. And unless you gave them written permission its against the law for them to photograph your children w/out your permission. I would probably ask the teacher about it and the director.

I would speak to the director about it. It sounds like the teachers are encouraging it & I would think most parents wouldn't want an older child holding their infant.

Re: questionable situation at daycare yesterday
Definitely speak to the director. That would not sit right with me either. At my daycare *occasionally* they will put an older child in the baby room for a time out but then they put them right back where they belong.

Re: questionable situation at daycare yesterday
The two main things that stand out to me and would definitely bother me are the picture taking (even if you signed something ok'ing pics, I'd assume that's ONLY for staff, not anyone else - I mean this kid takes the camera home and not to say they would, but they could post your child's pic online or whatever, etc, not ok for me) and also that older kids are holding the babies. Not ok.
Definitely speak to the teacher and or director. Good luck!

I would NOT be happy with another child holding my DC at that age. Not only is it a recipie for disaster, but there is a reason why older children are in their own rooms...the teacher to child ratio is dramatically different. And if I were the parent of the older child I would be just as upset about the situation.
