Questions about cataracts in dogs

My parent's dog, a Bichon Frise (sp?), is 5 years old and they just recently noticed he has a cataract on one of his eyes. The vet said that Bichons are prone to cataracts, but not usually this young. He thought it might be due to diabetes, but her blood showed no sign of diabetes (thank goodness!).

Is there anything my parents can do for Freedom?
Is there any way to cure a cataract (other than surgery)?
What would cause a cataract in a 5 year old dog?

I'd appreciate any insight you might have! Chat Icon

Is there anything my parents can do for Freedom? My Reggie had cataracts, but he was a diabetic. I remember that we took him to a opthomalogist(sp) vet in the city. he was on some heavy duty drops.

What would cause a cataract in a 5 year old dog? Sadly, he is a purebreed. Could be from inbreeding.

Re: Questions about cataracts in dogs

Thanks Reggie!

Luckily, Freedom is still a happy little maniac. Shows no signs of slowing down!!
My poor father though....they got the dog when all of the kids moved out of the house...so she's his little baby now. He's not taking it well.
