Questions about Minecraft... I have no clue!
I was hoping you guys could help me. My 7 year old DD has been mentioning Minecraft to me. Her friends at school play with it. I don't know much about it. I see that there is an app, a PC version, Xbox etc. So, here are my questions: Is this game appropriate for a 7 year old? Which version is best to purchase? Is it really as addicting as some people say?

Questions about Minecraft... I have no clue!
DD is 8 and has been playing Minecraft for about a year. We have it on her Ipad and she plays almost daily but I limit the time she plays that. Most of her friends play on Xbox and I think i has the capability to connect with others on there so I do not allow that yet. Personally, I think she is too young for online games. They talk about it at school alot, what they are building and stuff. Right now just playing on the Ipad is good enough for her.

It's appropriate and no more addicting than any other game I don't get the hype though :)
We have the pc version, and the app for iPod and iPad Xbox will be gifted this Xmas and we will then have it for that too
I would think its best on Xbox. It does come in handy on the IPod and iPad when we are out or long drives.

I think it is totally fine (even my 4 year old plays but she gets so addicted I have to really limit her) but I have no clue the appeal. I don't get the game at all.
My boys play on xbox and on their ipad/ipods but mostly xbox. They keep asking for the PC version too but my friend said it has given her computer too many virus that I am scared to use there.

Re: Questions about Minecraft... I have no clue!
DC have the PC version, and the Android version. I even built a Minecraft server for DS at one point.
It's a high-tech version of Legos or wooden blocks, which kids have loved for centuries. They can use their imagination to build anything they can think of, and since real physics don't really apply, they can build things that they can't build with wooden blocks or Legos. Kids love to build, so this just naturally fits into what their brains are looking for.
If you download it from the Minecraft site, https://minecraft.net/ you won't get any viruses. If anyone got a virus from downloading Minecraft, it's because they went to a 3rd party download site, which often gives you viruses, adware, malware, etc....
Quick chart on the different versions/platforms: https://help.mojang.com/customer/en/portal/articles/1274139-different-minecraft-editions
The PC version has the most features and the most add-ons, but all of the platforms are very similar.

I don't understand it either.
My son is not AS into it as he was, but they can become obsessive....even watching videos of it.

Re: Questions about Minecraft... I have no clue!
DS is 9, and has been playing it for about 2 years, and still loves it.
I think the best, is the creative world, where they can use their imagination and create stuff. The survival world is where they fight against monsters and zombies, so I'm not a fan of this one.
DS started playing with it on the iPad. Now he has the xbox version (that he plays sometimes when friends are over) and PC version.

This is so good to know! Thank you. I am so afraid of getting a virus but I will definitely download it directly from the website. DD is obsessed with Legos so this will be perfect for her.

Re: Questions about Minecraft... I have no clue!
My girls play on their ipads. I believe it was a free version when we got it. I know that they can sync their games and play together. They only use the building one as opposed to zombies that I know of...

I'm relieved this is an option because my kids are afraid of their own shadows. The building version is better for them as opposed to any zombies.

Questions about Minecraft... I have no clue!
If it's any consolation, I'd don't understand it either. My kids play with it on the iPad, iPhone & laptops. So much time they spend on it, I'm hoping they build a Minecraft Institute of Technology soon.

Re: Questions about Minecraft... I have no clue!
Totally appropriate for a 7yo. My 7 & 4yo play it on their tablets and xbox live. The online function of xbox live I monitor closely. Their only friends are 2-3 kids from school and their cousins. I have no issue with them playing with these kids. They know they cannot "friend" someone without first asking me, or I will disconnect their live account.
Minecraft like someone said is like legos. Its actually one of the better games IMO, google minecraft in the classroom and you will see that in some areas they using minecraft as a teaching tool.
My kids really have learned stuff from that game. My 4yo says his favorite gem is lapis because of its blue color...he learned that from minecraft.
There is creative mode and survival mode. Creative mode is just building. no enemies. My kids like that the most. The join in with their cousins/friends and build these extensive worlds. houses with full libraries, hot tubs, a moat around a castle, etc. Its amazing what you can do.
My 7yo says the best most frequently updated version is the PC version. We dont have that yet.

Questions about Minecraft... I have no clue!
Thank you everyone for all the input. I do think that Minecraft is perfect for my Lego loving kids. I am on the fence with getting it for my laptop. I have everything on it and would lose my mind if I got a virus. I'm thinking I'll try the tablet version and get them the XBox game for Christmas.

DS has been playing it on Playstation 3 for about a year but I don't let him play it online. He can play it for hours, I don't get it.
