Questions about the Glucose Tests
When do you get the test (at what week)?
What can I expect at the test?
What happens if you fail?
What happens if you fail the 2nd test?
Thanks all!

What can I expect at the test? You drink a specific amount of glucola (orange, coke, lemon lime flavored usually your choice) wait an hour and have your blood drawn. I have always been given mine to take home with me and drink before my appointment, EXACTLY 1 hour. Some docs do it in office.
What happens if you fail? You get a 3 hour test
What happens if you fail the 2nd test? Dont know always passed mine.

Re: Questions about the Glucose Tests
When do you get the test (at what week)?
Usually between 24 and 28 weeks.
What can I expect at the test?
Depends on the place.
I drank my drink at home (12 ounce drink that tastes like flat sweet orange soda) and then went into the OB where they drew my blood.
Some girls had to drink at the lab and wait there.
What happens if you fail?
If you fail, you have to complete the 3 hour test. Same thing, you drink the drink and then they take your blood every hour for 3 hours. It's long and boring.
What happens if you fail the 2nd test?
You will be diagnosed as having Gestational Diabetes and most likely have to modify your diet and exercise and take insulin shots.
I know some women who were able to control it though diet alone and some who HAD to have the insulin. Not sure exactly what determines which protocol.

You can do it, you will do what you have to do for a healthy baby.... I take injections (not insulin) daily in my stomach and it is not as bad as I thought it would be, I hardly even feel it now

Re: Questions about the Glucose Tests
Thank you so much everyone for your responses. I saw sooo many of us going to the test I thought I'd better know what was going on before my doc sends me.

Re: Questions about the Glucose Tests
When I failed the 1hr, my doc told me that you don't always have to take insulin shots. Many times, you can control your levels with diet and exercise. You will have to take the insulin if diet/exercise alone doesn't work.

Re: Questions about the Glucose Tests
I failed both and didn't have to go on Insulin. I had it controlled by diet. I went to the Diabetes Center at Winthrop and had a meal plan that I had to follow. I tested I my blood 4 times a day.. I think.

Around 28 weeks I think
drink the glucose drink, I had the orange and cola drinks they were bad at all. then you get blood drawn
if you fail the one hour you take the 3 hour. YOu again drink the glucose drink and get blood drawn and give urine every hour for three hours.
I passed the 3hr, but I think if you fail they may send you to a nutrionist to change your diet and if that doesn't work then insulin to regulate you levels.

Re: Questions about the Glucose Tests
yes--exactly what above post says. I just failed my one hour--im going friday for 3 hour--and if I fail my doc is sending me to a nutritionist.if that does not work u do insulin. I did fertillity meds with a insulin gauge needle. The shots really are nothing and I hate shots***

the same thing happened to me. i failed and was able to control my sugar via a special diet that I actually still follow (no white breads or sugar) and I took my blood sugar 6 times a day

Before I got PG I was on a very strict diet b/c I was not processing sugars correctly. They were making me jittery, almost like a caffiene OD> I would hate to do all of that work detoxing & regulating my digestion & diet just to be put on meds now. I am a firm believer in Meds as a last resort. Thanks for the additional info guys!
