Questions for the moms of older babies with a milk protein allergy...

Chat Icon was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy at 3 months. He's on Nuramagin and at his last gastro appointment the tests came back negative for blood in the stool.

When we went for his 9 month appointment, the doctor we saw (not the one we've been seeing since his 3 month appointment) said we could start dairy products (cheese, yogurt, etc). I spoke with our regular doctor shortly after that and he said to wait until about 10 months.

I'm just curious to know when you started dairy products and if your child had any reactions to them? We have to see the gastro again about a month after starting to check everything out. We're coming up on the 10 month mark and I guess I'm a little nervous. Any comments or advice would be great! Chat Icon

Re: Questions for the moms of older babies with a milk protein allergy...

We actually saw an allergist today for my 7 month old, and he recommended trying dairy (cheese specifically) for my DD now...he said to try it a little in the morning, and if no reaction by the afternoon, try a bit more. If she seemed fine with that, he thought we could then introduce yogurt as well. He doesn't want her on a milk or soy based formula until a year, but he thinks trying to introduce a few dairy products would be fine. She doesn't have a true "allergy" as she was tested for it, but she does have what is typically referred to as an allergy because of her body's response to them.

We were told not to introduce milk just yet (at 1 year we'll try), but that dairy products would be okay to start trying.

Anyone else?

At 3 1/2 DD is still allergic to milk. After Nutramigen she went on to Elecare. She is on Rice milk now.

DS is 3 years old. He was diagnosed as milk protein allergic before 6 months old (can't remember exactly) and then before he was a year he had blood and skin allergy tests which diagnosed him as severely dairy allergic. He gets retested every year and until his numbers look better (they have actually gotten worse) we can't introduce any.

My DS is 3 and still severely allergic to dairy. Has your DC actually be tested to confirm there is an allergy? Personally, I would never introduce dairy on my own without knowing. My DS gets retested every year so I know he's still allergic (actually the numbers have gotten worse). If you do go ahead and try dairy, please, please make sure you have children's benadryl in the house! We have an epi-pen and I've even had to bring my DS to the ER for a reaction to dairy.

Re: Questions for the moms of older babies with a milk protein allergy...

Our doctor told us that he has a milk protein allergy... which I think is different from a milk or dairy allergy. He has a hard time breaking down the milk proteins in regular formula, so he takes the formula that is already partially broken down for him. He never had any kind of terrible reaction from his formula (and even the Nutramagin is still milk based), the doctor just found microscopic blood in his stool, which stopped within months of starting the Nutramagin. He said that most babies who have this particular allergy do fine on whole milk at a year. Supposedly, it is very common...

Even the pediatric gastro he has been seeing said to start dairy products around 10 months...

Now Im so confused!

Maybe he just has a sensitivity? A dairy allergy is an allergy to the proteins in milk and dairy products so it's the same thing. My DS never had blood in his stool that I know of. Just hives, eczema, and with more severe reactions vomiting, runny nose & eyes, etc. If your doctor's okay with it then it's probably more of a sensitivity than a true allergy.

From what the OP wrote, I am thinking that her DC has what my DD has...not a true "allergy" as in allergic reaction, but the sensitivity where they have the reaction in their intestines. I never really understood the difference until the allergist explained it to me. She never had hives, etc, just excema, blood in her stool, and projectile vomiting. He actually related it to colitis.

I have to agree with NJmom and say have him tested at the allergists office. Now, I am not a dr. and am not sure how stool samples work, but if he hasn't had any dairy then their shouldn't be blood in his stool. So I feel like you might a false postive. Does this make sense?Chat Icon If you get a skin test done you will know in minutes.

My DD has dairy allergies and she still has them at 2. We will continue to get her re-tested every year and like NJ's DS, her numbers increased with her milk allergy and her egg stayed the same.

Yes, this is more like what he has, although he never even had the projective vomiting!
