QUICK BFING QUESTION!! TIA!!!
So my cousin is nursing her day old baby at the hospital(there are no LCs or nurses that are helping her)
but anyway, he latched on like a pro...going for 2.5 hours at a time!!
I have zero experience with this since mine only did 3 minutes at a time.
Is that too long for her nipples? Are they going to crack? She doesn't want to mess up, but that's a long time!
tia!!

Re: QUICK BFING QUESTION!! TIA!!!
Yes it is too long. The most should be 15 minutes on each breast.
The baby may be using her as a pacifier... thats what my doctor told me when I would let DS nurse for an hour at one sitting.

Re: QUICK BFING QUESTION!! TIA!!!
The baby ate probably in the first 20-40 minutes. THe baby just used her as a human pacifier!

Re: QUICK BFING QUESTION!! TIA!!!
They will probably crack anyway.
But yes, that is too long according to many sources (but not LLL - they think the baby should nurse whenever and as long as it wants).
After the first 15 min. on each side, the baby isn't getting any more nourishment and is sucking for comfory. Take the boob out and give the baby a paci.... otherwsie mom will be exhausted and drained and baby won't learn how to soothe with the paci. They have a strong sucking reflex and that is what is going on.

Re: QUICK BFING QUESTION!! TIA!!!
As long as her latch is good she should be OK. I'm not really a fan of limiting time at the breast, especially if she's building her supply, but if it gets to be too much she could try popping him off after 20 min or so if it looks like he's falling alseep.
DS stayed on for 20 min at a time when he was in the hospital --some people tried to tell me to take him off earlier, but I never did and I never had problems with supply or weight gain, either -- I think there was a correlation. I tend to think babies know what they're doing. Such a shame she has no help though.
ETA: Cracked nipples are the result of a bad latch not the length of the feeding. Does she have Lansinoh cream?

ITA with the amount of time on the breast is best especially in the beginning. As long as mother and baby are cool with it I say go for it.

Re: QUICK BFING QUESTION!! TIA!!!
90% of milk comes out during the first 10-15 minutes of nursing...but, when my son was a day old, I nursed him for 30 minutes on each breast...I also did not have a LC available and the nurses at Beth Israel $ucked! But I let him be and I just applied a large amount of the Lansinoh cream afterwards...I swear by that cream.

Re: QUICK BFING QUESTION!! TIA!!!
thanks!!!! I did not want to give her any wrong info. We don't come from a BFing family at all, so I am so proud of her for doing it.
Thank God I had a great support team at my hospital. My mother is down there at the hospital now raising hell... she has become so pro-bfing since Josh. They told my cousin she must supplement...my mother says she needs an advocate and is trying to get an LC down there.
I knew I could get quick results here, thanks!!!!

Re: QUICK BFING QUESTION!! TIA!!!
My DS liked to nurse 30 minute son each breast. But not 2.5 hours. She needs to take him off after like 20 minutes on each side. However, her milk supply should increase if she is lettiner her child go for that long with suckling. The LC's say let the baby determine the suckling time but in this case i think the baby is using her as a pacifier. Its comforting to them at that age.

I agree with this. I didn't kn ow better and totally limited DD and had major supply issues. Maybe it was unrelated but I think one had some to do with the other.
Good latch is the most important.

totally agree.
i think she can expect some mild nipple soreness in the beginning no matter how long he is on the breast for. but if the latch is good there shouldn't be cracking or bleeding. lansinoh ointment is AWESOME - highly recommend it!

Re: QUICK BFING QUESTION!! TIA!!!
I didn't get a chance to read alll the answers - but I can tell you my daughter was the SLOWEST nurser ever...most of the time at least 20 min per boob and multiple times on each...so just beware of that. it would take me HOURS to nurse her....a LC should be able to help with that. (Oh and yes, it's hurt - I was cracked and bleeding all the time!!)

Yes, I think it's too long. I thought my daughter was too long at 45 min. at a time, going every 2 hours. My LC told me it should be 20 minutes.

I agree with this...my DD is a slow nurser, but is actively nursing the whole time. she usually goes for at least 20 minutes per breast, and does BOTH sides at every feeding. Her last feeding before bed can last an hour & a half. And I truly believe she is eating the whole time. Thankfully I didn't have any bleeding, but I did have major cracking/discomfort, but the cream was a lifesaver!
