Quitting my job....

I need some advice... I have been working for this company for 5 years -- they moved to Florida last July and I continue to work, but from home. Anyway I am starting my own business doing the same thing, and have to quit. I have such anxiety about telling my boss I am leaving. I don't liek the guy, and he has taken away our 401K, and my health benefits.... so it should bea easy, right? Well I am so nervous, not sure how to do this.....

Any suggestions?????????????

Its never easy, but you have to think about what is best for you and not turning it into a personal thing between you and your boss. Business is business. If he needed to make a decision concerning him that would be better for him and his business he would do it too, and it sounds like he has!

Good luck!

I would talk to him and let him know that you have had a wonderful experience working for them, but you beleive now its time to move on. If he asks you why you can say i've decided to work for myself. Just be as nice as possible and tell them that you have enjoyed working there- you never know when you'll need a reference.

Also make sure you don't have a non-compete clause. Taht could make this messy. Just don't tell them you learend a lot- that may be an issue if theres a non-compete clause.

It's the anticipation that is the worst. Write up your cover letter, give him a call and tell him that you decided to explore new ventures and will be submitting your resignation via fax in a few minutes.

The quicker you do it, the sooner it will be over.

Re: Quitting my job....

We don't have a non-compete but....my clients and suppliers (some of them) will be going with me. I spoke to him about a year ago about going on my own and he threatened me and made me very nervous about this.....

Should I just send a letter at 5pm today????? Or speak to him first?? I am willing to stay to the end of the year if he needs me. Also I work on commissions and I have a TON of $$ outstanding -- but I don't collect until cleints pay and that takes 3-6 months.

Ug it is just so difficult for me...

I would definitely talk to him, but have your resignation letter available. I think it would be a shock- and a little cold- if just a letter arrived. If you have been there a while, you owe them teh curtesy of a phone call.

What did your boss threaten you with? If there is no non-compete clause, then what can he do? He may be trying to intimidate you- but that is no reason to give in.

You'll be OK!! This happens all the time.

Re: Quitting my job....

Thanks ladies --- well I was supposed to get a commission check on Friday but didn't. So that just means he will have 1 week less warning. I think I will pull the offended and put-upon employee situation -- I have lost a lot of benefits since the office moved, I can't stand the girl who does the accounting (who obviously never wants to pay me Chat Icon ), and so I think I will make it more like a sudden decision, and also blame him for the fact that he hasn't paid one of our suppliers, which means I don't get my commissions which are quite a few thousand $$. All of which are true...
