Re: Raleigh vs Charlotte
Raleigh is the Capital of NC but much smaller than Charlotte. Actually a lot of the Federal building are also in Charlotte.
Charlotte is much bigger. If I moved to NC I would move near Charlotte and not Raleigh.
DH works in the finance industry. So Charlotte is better for that.
ETA: I lived in Raleigh for 8 years.

Re: Raleigh vs Charlotte
We are waiting to start building right outside of Raleigh but we are actually contemplating now looking into Charlotte just to save a little money. I really want to be a SAHM now with the baby coming so any info anyone has, please pass it along!!!

Re: Raleigh vs Charlotte
FH and I looked briefly into moving to NC - I found that Charlotte was MUCH cheaper (and Ive been to both, but not to look at houses). Charlotte seems more "southern" (NASCAR, Confederate flags) than Raleigh.
Charlotte is a big financial center - but I would have taken a large paycut to move down there, and so would FH (and I work in finance).

Re: Raleigh vs Charlotte
So...not to hijack but, would you choose to build a house in the Wake Forest area, or the Charlotte area?
DH and I are going down in May to look at areas and find where we want to build. What are the pors and cons of Charlotte and Wake Forest...if you don't mind me asking.
And to the OP. I hope this can answer your question as well.

Re: Raleigh vs Charlotte
right now I am north of Charlotte(Huntersville)..about 20 minutes from downtown. Not Southern around me at all. I love where I live. I am a SAHM. We haven't bought a house yet, still waiting to see where DH ends up jobwise, he has to move around to move up.
I haven't been to Raleigh though, so I don't know to compare.
I feel like we are in a good spot though, close to mountains and 4 hours from the beach.

Re: Raleigh vs Charlotte
We chose Charlotte over Raleigh for several reasons, however, the biggest one was the financial centers that are in Charlotte, and my husband and I knowing that it would be easier for us to find jobs here. I'm a CPA that was auditing financial companies in NY, my husband was a banker, for us, plus housing, feel of Charlotte, etc. I also didn't have to take a paycut at all to move here (got a 10% raise from my NY salary withinn 6 months) and my husband is also with his NY company making his NY salary . Charlotte was the best pick for us. Charlotte also has (IMO) a nicer "city"/downtown, which is REALLY up and coming and developing every where you look.
As far as it being "more southern", you are moving to the south, and this is a "race town" and something to note (there are three NASCAR events, + it was just picked for the NASCAR hall of fame), but depending on the crowds you run in, you'd never know it (i.e. please dont come here thinking there will be confederate flags all over the place, I have maybe seen three on license plates in 2+ years). Most people you run into have moved here from out of state, finding a native Charlottean is actually fairly rare.
Both places are beautiful, both places can be great places to live, I think it depends on the industry you/SO are in and which town suits you better for other obvious reasons. Good luck in your search!
