Ran into breastfeeding issues, need advice on cracked bleeding nipples
Well I had DD #2 on Sunday and haven't really had much time to do a formal reintroduction but all is going well with the exception of my poor nipples! I was told my latch was good in the hospital but now that I'm engorged I don't think DD has latched on too well Today one of them cracked and started to bleed and I think the other side will soon follow if I don't fix this asap, any advice/ home remedies are welcome!

I was not a successful breast feeder, but I had similar problems and eventually called a lactation consultant. it turned out that DS was tongue tied.
The next time your baby cries, look under her tongue and see if you can see a tiny "string" attaching the tongue to the bottom of the mouth.
Other than that, I have no advice. Hang in there!

Are you airing them out? ie no bra after nursing. Load up on Lansinoh. Watch that latch. Makes sure baby is not just taking in your nipple, your areola has to be in baby's mouth as well so you won't get sore.

I agree with the 2 previous posters my ds was tongue tied and I hired a lactaction consultant on day 5. i used lots of lanolin especially prior to a shower. Work on different positions and the latch.

Thanks we just had a good nursing session with my injured breast and no bleeding plus she really emptyied it this time, what relief! I think the problem has been the night feedings when I'm half asleep and not paying attention to how she latches. Right now I got the girls airing out, DH is pleased with this advice

just to clarify, the muscle underneath is supposed to be there, its when its attached too far forward towards the tip of the tongue that they are "tongue tied" bc it limits their tongues range of motion when its attached so far forward.

Correct. If it is a tongue tie the tongue will look heart shaped or square when the baby cries.

Re: Ran into breastfeeding issues, need advice on cracked bleeding nipples
I had terrible cracked and bleeding nips. I would put hot and then cold water on them immediately after bfing, cold tea bags, and lansinoh lanolin. It is the ONLY one that does the trick. Good luck!

Haha!! That's good. Night time is so hard. I remember being so tired and having to make sure DS was pushed into my boob...not hanging off so that his latch stayed good. The good news is the stronger she gets and the more your nips toughen up it won't be as big of a deal. It will kind of be a no brainer.

Re: Ran into breastfeeding issues, need advice on cracked bleeding nipples
Hang in there. It does get better as they get older. I had such problems in the beginning I was in tears one day it hurt so bad. I ended up calling a lactation consultant and she was worth every penny! I tried the Lansinoh and I HATED it. It was so thick and my nipples were so sore, that it hurt just to spread it on. I used the Medela Lanolin and it was SOOOO much better.

it does get better...its still early and your nips are not used to this yet..
I had a lot of bleeding issues with both and went on to bf for a full yr with both my kids!
airing out is good those creams are supposed to help (never did for me) I would sometimes pump the bleeding one so it was still getting stimulated and nurse on the "good" one..

Re: Ran into breastfeeding issues, need advice on cracked bleeding nipples
I literally walked around with NO shirt of bra the first 8 weeks.... Lots of air time. Really watch that latch. If you are super engorged hand express some of the milk before you put the baby to the breast so its easier to latch....
It will get better! GREAT JOB mama and congrats on your new little one!
