Random--China and crystal stemware that is hand wash
do you really hand wash it? When I do use it, I absolutely hand wash it....but I'm wondering if anyone has a newer dishwasher with a china cycle; mine doesn't have that and i wonder if it's really safe...should I ever get a new dishwasher!

I put my crystal and china in the dishwasher now since we have a china/crystal cycle. My biggest concern is the gold plating wearing off the dishes, but we don't use them enough where I think it will happen that quickly.

Re: Random--China and crystal stemware that is hand wash
If i had a china cycle I would....until then, it's hand wash. Not like I've used more than 2 place settings, but still! Also, the flatware--I have flatware that goes with the china, again--in its case, not used yet...that can go in; it's stainless steel.
I think my set (Mikasa) says dishwasher is not recommended...but I'm sure it was printed before all the fancy china cycle washers came out! Curious as to what others do....

I handwash mine. My china has gold plating on the edges and I am afraid it would come off.

yeah, you shouldn't do it if there's gold or platinum on the dishes. The abrasiveness of the detergent will scour it off probably within 20 runs or so....
I purposefully registered for dishwasher safe china (all white... no gold / platinum... 'rosenthal suomi white') for that reason
our glasses have extremely long and delicate stems, so they're definitely a handwash only item .... couldn't resist them, though

Yep, same here. WE use dishwasher and I only use my china maybe 2x a year, if that.

Actually, the heat and any friction from other items is more likely to remove the gold. Although I wouldn't use a citrus detergent, which can be corrosive (whether in the dishwasher or when handwashed) to most china & flatware.
For the most part, it's the heat and pressure that cleans the dishes, not the detergent.

if you used your china weekly, I'd say hand wash them. But if you're only using it for several occasions a year, I don't think you'll have an issue.

Re: Random--China and crystal stemware that is hand wash
I hand wash... Our dishwasher doesn't have a "china/crystal" setting (I think!) and I just don't see the point of taking the risk of the platinum edge coming off.

Re: Random--China and crystal stemware that is hand wash
I have a china/crystal setting on my dishwasher and run them through all of the time without any problems. I don't have any metal accents on my plates or glasses though.
