Random: Homeowners affected by the storm

I know a lot of people have talked about selling and getting far away from the South Shore.

Anyone else looking at this as an opportunity to upgrade and re-do your home?

DH has been on a spree this past week..........he wants to gut our entire first floor and re-do the kitchen and living room area, even though they weren't affected by the storm.

He feels that given what happened, there's no time like the present. And it's not like we can probably sell in the near future.

Now, granted I don't know if we will actually go through with this because of this necessity called MONEY, but I do see where he is coming from.

I have heard others in my area who have the same line of thinking.

We were looking to sell before the storm, so it really has no bearing on our decision. I actually wanted to get out of Zone A so we didn't have to pay $$$$$$ in flood insurance, and so we could buy our own home (we currently own a 2-family with SIL). We were thinking of staying in Massapequa or West Islip, north of Merrick Rd but south of Sunrise. We will still look in the same areas when we decide to sell.

When dh and I bought our home, friends and family of ours were having a hard time getting insurance bc of hurricane and flooding fears. my biggest worry was water in the basement. I feel like water in the basement or flooding really compromises the strength and quality of a home. If the insurance companies were dropping people , I certainly didn't want to purchase a home there. All of the homes I'm thinking of have flooded.

We bought mid island in plainview / OB. Never had water in our basement or any weather related damage.

Long story short, I would sell if my home ever flooded. It will happen again so I couldn't peacefully live there.

I would save the money and move to another part of the island, not upgrade a home that has flooded.

A family member is just like your DH, and planning a lot for his home that was completely flooded. I don't understand why he won't move Chat Icon

I think he looks at it as we're stuck with this, why not make the best of it.

I stopped home today and drove around my neighborhood. There's dumpsters in front of so many houses and people are tossing out items from 2nd floor windows.

A couple of my neighbors I spoke to seem so defeated by this, but also long to build again, with hopes that this was a once in a lifetime thing.
