Random questions for those with young kids that play soccer

My almost 4 year old DD is going to be starting soccer soon and needs a soccer ball and shin guards. 2 questions:

1. Where is the best place to get shin guards? Do I get the hard shell ones, or the ones that look like socks?

2. For the soccer ball, my DD saw a princess one that she liked. Do the kids tend to have all different colors/styles or stick to the regular black and white ball.

Sorry for all the silly questions, but I'm new at this!

I believe we got all of DD's stuff at Sports Authority. She had ones that were stirrups on the bottom by the foot and velcro'd around her calf. Yes for practice all the girls had different balls (mostly pink :) ) but for the the games, the league provided the ball (I think!)

FIL bought Sean's ball and shin guards so he didn't get to pick his ball (regular black/white) he doesn't care much, but the other kids have all kinds of colors/patterns/pictures etc -

In our league, each age range has a different size ball. You'll probably need a size 3.
All the kids have different balls. Makes it easier figuring out who's is who's. DD has socks with built-in guards, and DS has traditional shin guards.

We got our stuff from Modell's.
