random shampoo question

I just got back from getting my hair cut and blown straight (yay!) and the girl asked me what kind of shampoo I use. I must admit I'm a girl on a budget so it's usually V05 or Suave or whatever's on sale at Target/CVS. She said my roots were really oily and cheap shampoos ruin your hair slowly. She put baby powder on my scalp. I don't know, to me my hair looks fine, lol. She said I need to go to Ulta and get a professional grade shampoo and that I can substitute in with something cheap like Tresemme occasionally. She recommended Sebastian or Matrix brands. Just wondering your thoughts and recommendations for the best place to get products like that CHEAPLY.... thanks!!! :)

Chat Icon I dunno, something about "cheap shampoos" I've never heard that they can ruin your hair. They may not have as much ingredients or do as much for your hair as the more expensive brands, but I always believe shampoo is shampoo. I occasionally splurge on the higher priced brands, but I usually go back to my Dove or Fructis and my hair is fine.

You can get deals on eBay for higher priced brands if you want to try it.

Re: random shampoo question

The cheaper shampoos use more alcohol & other chemicals in them, which is how they can ruin your hair.

I like John Frieda though, even though it is available almost everywhere.

Re: random shampoo question

Try Target or Walmart. They have expensive shampoos/conditioners at a cheaper price.

Why not use Pantene?

Would Pantene be considered "professional?" When I said Tresemme, which I thought was professional, she said that that would be the cheapest one she would recommend.

I don't know, I've been going to her for years and this is the first mention...

Re: random shampoo question

Ulta runs sales on the salon shampoos and I buy them all the time. Usually it's one liter for $10 or $12 which I think is a decent price. I usually get Matrix or ISO or Rusk.

Matrix makes the "sleek look" line that I swear by. I don't know where you live, but there is a beauty suppy place in downtown Smithtown (accross the street from Nappertandy's) that sells it at a "reasonable" price. I sometimes will go to Target to get it, but it's actually pretty pricey there. I would definitely try a discount beauty supply store. Keeps your hair nice and straight and frizz free.

I remember when I had gotten my hair trial done for my wedding, my stylist said the same to me about m roots, but suggested that I may not be rinsing out the conditioner as much as I should. Now I really rinse for a while and have not had a problem since. I don't know if you condition a lot, but since I blow my hair straigght everyday, I condition it everyday. Just thought I would offer that as a possibility too.

Hmm, that's good to know about the conditioner actually. Sometimes I just do a really quick conditioning instead of shampooing. Maybe I'm not rinsing enough or didn't rinse enough this morning before I went...
thanks for all the tips guys!

Re: random shampoo question

I used to use Goldwell shampoo and conditioner for my color treated hair. I started using Pantene afterwards and saw no difference.

Re: random shampoo question

Chat Icon What a load of crap! Look at a biolage bottle and a suave"biolage" bottle. They have the SAME things in them. They make a HUGE commision on that stuff!! I use the Suave imitation line with the Humectant(?) and Biolage and it is the very same thing. My stylist said the same thing like 2 yrs ago and pushed the Biolage on me. I used it until it was gone and then switched. When I went back 8months later she asked if I was still using the Biolage and I said yes. She commented on how wonderful my hair was and that not using things like Suave make such a difference. I no longer see this greedy liar.

Re: random shampoo question

I have to say...we are on vacation and we bought suave because it's cheap and we don't intend to bring it home with us. I see a big difference in the texture of my hair. I also have to use a lot more of it than with my regular shampoo. I am not a fan. I only use Herbal Essences which I don't really consider to be a very expensive shampoo but it is a lot better for me.

I'm in the minority. I think a good shampoo & conditioner can help your hair look better.

I know that for my hair (colored every 4 weeks, JHS), using a professiional conditioner helped tremendously. I use middle of the range priced shampoo.

I think more important than the type of shampoo is your diet. The vitamin biotin is excellent for hair, skin & nails. Any health food store or Costco sells it.

Ulta is having a big sale on shampoo right now. And in the add in the paper today there was a $3.50 off coupon. HTH

Re: random shampoo question

I use Dove and have no problems with my hair. Infact, my hair is one of the nicest things on my body. I never have a problem with cheaper shampoos, and infact, recently landed myself in the ER with an allergic reaction to one of those really expensive shampoosChat Icon
