random topic: extremities in cold weather
Does anyone else have their fingers and toes get so cold that the tips turn blueish? I am in my house the heat is at 69 degrees, I have on a tee shirt, flannel PJ's, thermal fleece socks and I am wearing a hat. Plus, I am sipping hot water. I could swear my fingertips are turning blue. W T H? Normal or not normal...discuss.

Re: random topic: extremities in cold weather
If I'm REALLY cold inside, my nail bed gets a bluish tint but my whole body is really cold, too. The warm cup of tea thing helps a lot, as does wearing layers and socks.
However, I have a friend with Raynoids (sp_ and THAT is blue.

I also have poor circulation in my hands and they turn a blue-ish/orange-ish color in extreme cold.
I don't have Raynaud's. Guess it's just something I have to live with. I do try to keep my hands warm all the time.

Re: random topic: extremities in cold weather
that's normal if you don't have good circulation.
its also natural for your body, in extreme cold, to draw blood away from the extremeties....to support the heart and keep it warm to prevent hyper-thermia.

Dina- I have Reynaud's Syndrome- from when I was about 12. If it gets bad- like if I touch snow, some fingers turn dead white- just be careful about staying warm enough!

Re: random topic: extremities in cold weather
It happens to me even if it's not that cold. I remember I accompanied my mom to a doctor's appointment in August. It was cold in the office with the AC & I was wearing strappy shoes. The doctor walked in and for some reason noticed this immediately and said "Good god! Your feet are blue!!" I thought it was funny. He said I should get checked for Reynaud's Syndrome but I read about it on line and it didn't sound like me.

Normal to some extent.
BUT you have a history to consider, so make sure you call your doctor.

Re: random topic: extremities in cold weather
I actually had to take my baby to the cardiologist for this last year because they wanted to make sure she didn't have issues with her heart. Turns out her hands and feet just turn blue when they are cold and nothing more.

I have never heard of this. How do you get tested for it?

So in the limited research I did online, it seems like this is a side effect of my surgery...a low tolerance to extreme cold. Another wonderful side effect of heart surgery & a heart defect.
