Rant: Plainview Hospital
So my cousin just came home yesterday from Plainview Hospital and lets just say she is beyond ******. Baby was on Enfamil and upon discharge the nurse gave her a gift bag from Enfamil, but took the enfamil out and put similac sensative in and told her this is what the MD wanted her to use. When she told me this I was floored. The AAP does not want any baby on a lactose free product (Sim Sensative was lactose free that was renamed..prob b/c no one used it - all the other companies discountinued it) When she asked her ped today why he recommended this, (b/c I refused to let her feed this to her son) he was like, ummm I didn't. She told him what the nurse said and lets just say thank god she got her name! That is such crap!! So..just and FYI for all you ..in case this happens to you.

what if the baby has a milk protein allergy, they could not have a formula with lactose in it, could they?

Re: Rant: Plainview Hospital
I guess I should explain further..the nurse said the MD recommended this for gas. The AAP doesn't want babies that can tolerate lactose (which is about 98% of the population) on a lactose free product b/c if you stop giving lactose the enzyme lactase stops producing in the gut.
The AAP recommends a milk based formla when milk protein allergy is not suspected

Yup.
My friend is a NICU nurse and gave me a ton of samples of it.
I sort of feeling there is a piece missing here....

Re: Rant: Plainview Hospital
there is no reason to start a 3 day old on a lactose free product. Especially if the MD did not perscribe it and baby was on a different brand. Totally not appropriate.
As a ped. dietitian we/I would never recommend lactose free products b/c of the AAP recommendation and the fact that they are outdated. Babies need lactose to keep lactase working in the gut.

Are you getting a paid plug everytime you mention AAP?
Sorry - couldn't resist. I'm sure your sister will work everything out appropriately for her child....

honestly, it's a sample can. she can easily throw it out or give it away and buy what she wants. it's not like she HAS to feed the baby that formula--it's her decision.

WOW!! Nice support ladies...Guess this is not a great forum to voice frustrations huh...gotta love LI moms!
Anyway..it was just the point of the situation that the hospital nurses find it appropriate to overstep a MD's order for a different brand.

How do you know this is what happened? How do you know it wasn't just a mistake, and considering that the baby COULD have this formula, it really isn't the end of the world.
But she did the right thing checking with her ped.

The thing is - as moms, you learn from these experiences to do your own research and become an advocate for your child. I love my OBGYN but she almost sent me home to be induced in a week when I was leaking fluid. I refused to leave without further examination and sure enough I had to be induced immediately. You NEVER take anyone's word when it comes to yours or your child's health without checking and double and triple checking.... You can vent. You will sometimes get support and sometimes get different perspectives... Its all a part of posting on here....

Re: Rant: Plainview Hospital
My pediatrician recommended similac sensitive when DD#2 was only like 2 weeks old or so. She had horrible gas and reflux and Mylecon was a joke! I could dose mylecon all day long. She was having projectile vomitting. So we did the similac sensitive for about 2 months, then switched her back to Similac Advanced. Between the sensitive formula and a "unique" feeding schedule, she hasn't vomitted in a long time. Everything's been fine even though she started out on sensitive. She gained weight and is thriving, has been from the beginning. Have no idea why the AAP would say such at thing, but not to sound unsupportive, I've found you have to take their "guide"lines with a grain of salt sometimes. If I had to do it again with the sensitive formula, I would.

Not to be difficult but out of curiosity I would love to read some medical research that shows this. DD#1 was lactose intolerant and the only formula (I bf so she was only supplemented starting at 9 months) DD#2 now will only BF but the ped GI and my ped both recommended a lactose free formula to try with her. So I'm curious to read some research that shows what you are saying for my own benefit.

Re: Rant: Plainview Hospital
I delivered my DS at Plainview and the nurses were fantastic!! Also, I was breastfeeding at first, but when I wasn't supplying enough, I had to start supplementing and she told me to use Similac Sensitive because it was more like breastmilk and would be easier on DS's belly.

Re: Rant: Plainview Hospital
I started DD on similac senstive on literally 5 days old. On the site it even says its milk based..so not sure where the milk protein allergy thing comes in...DD never had a milk protein allergy it's just the formula she did best with and we never looked back...
