Plainview Hospital or Winthrop?
Even though it's really early to be thinking about hospitals my super organized self can't help but think about these things... so... I live in Massapequa and my doc is affiliated with both North Shore U LIJ-Plainview Hospital and Winthrop (in Mineola).
My mom wants us to go to Winthrop but I'm wondering if it's worth the drive...
Have any of you used either hospital, and what is your take?
TIA

Re: Plainview Hospital or Winthrop?
My Ob is associated with both, but we didnt get to pick.. if you went into birth before 32 weeks I would have went to winthrop, after 32 weeks was NSP.
Did your doc say you can pick?

I live in Massapequa and I drive to Winthrop. Actually with first DS I lived in Babylon & still made the drive to Winthrop. It is not that long of a drive, and their new life center is amazing. They have fantastic staff and are well equipped if there is anything unexpected. I had a very high-risk PG with a very high-risk delivery, and I truly believe that their proficiency with High-risk saved mine & my son's life.

I heard Winthrop is the better hospital in neonatal care when its a high risk case, and if something was to go wrong. I did deliver last pregnancy at NSP and overall they were great, we didnt have any complications and wasnt high risk. Im delivering again at NSP with this baby. I have no complaints, just stinks that I may have to share a room with someone and a bathroom with 3 other moms.

Re: Plainview Hospital or Winthrop?
Four years ago my nephew was born 6-weeks early at Plainview. They were no where near capable of caring for a NICU baby. He had to be transported to Northshore and ended up in NICU for 10 days. Had he been delivered at a hospital that was able to care for him from the minute he was born, he probably wouldn't have developed the complications he developed that warranted an extra stay. So I would look at the NICU capabilities of both and make my choice that way - you never know WHAT may happen or what your DC may need and I personally would rather have the facilities available to me. I do not know if the Plainview NICU has changed in 4-years so this may be a moot point - I am only speaking from what I witnessed (almost) 4 years ago.

Re: Plainview Hospital or Winthrop?
My doc doesn't give us the option. He is affiliated with Plainview and Winthrop as well, but you only go to Winthrop if you are high risk. I have heard great things about Plainview, and I delivered my DD at Winthrop. They are great there too.

I didn't know Plainview even had a NICU (i thought any baby that needed it was xfered to Manhasset). I would definitely go with Winthrop just because i feel like they have more advanced resources if, god forbid, you need them.

Calling what Plainview had a NICU may be an error on my part. They had a special 'room' where my newphew was placed away from the other babies. they did call it something, but you are right, I don't think they called it a NICU

Re: Plainview Hospital or Winthrop?
i think if given the option Winthrop sounds better...my mom said she really didn't want me to go to Plainview (and she had me there back when it was Central General) but sometimes you have to take mom's advice with a grain of salt... i hope i don't regret saying that

My SIL delivered at Plainview and no complaints. She had her own room (it was gorgeous). My brother and SIL were happy with their experience.

Re: Plainview Hospital or Winthrop?
If I had to chose between the two Winthrop hands down. It has the better NICU so if something god forbid goes wrong and you are at Plainview you take the chance that the baby would be transfered to another hospital. Plus in general I think Winthrop is a better hospital than Plainview.

Re: Plainview Hospital or Winthrop?
I delivered at Winthrop and was so happy with my experiece. The New Life Center was recently redone and is terrific. Having the NICU was also good piece of mind. I am actually delighted to go back there for #2
Although, if you can, it's totally worth it to go for the private room!

Re: Plainview Hospital or Winthrop?
I can't speak for Winthrop, but I just delivered at Plainview 2 weeks ago. At first, I was a little iffy because it's such a small hospital. But OMG was it great.
I got a private room, no extra charge..they have 4 LDRP rooms and 5 private rooms. And they fill each double room with one person first before they start doubling up.
The staff, everyone from L&D to Maternity to the Nursery were great and very helpful. The food was way better than I expected. And my last night there, they gave DH and I a special dinner, which was great.
I loved my experience there..everyone was nice and went out of their way to help me, with breastfeeding and anything else I needed.
