Kind of like one of those posters wrote, 1984 - all those pics gave me the feel of that!

Thanks for posting. I saved the link to show my students in the fall. It is very rare to find pics of N. Korea.
For those of you who don't know their leader breeds hatred of Americans even more than Saddham Hussein, they use a warped interpretation of the "Diary of Anne Frank" to justify the atrocities of the Holocaust of WWII on the western world, AND they do have nuclear capabilites with a leader crazy enough to use it.
And let's see what is our gov't doing about it????
Oh, yeah... nothing because they have no oil. Just like Darfur OMG! I didn't know that about Anne Frank's Diary

I am not sure that this is the reason. I am not a Bush supporter, but I think if he got into a war with N. Korea we'd be a pile of dust before he could get to that red button that launches the missle.....
Although I DO think that is exactly the reason we are in the middle east.

60 minutes about 9 months ago.
North Korea is one of the most repressed and still purely totalitarian states in the world. Unlike many, USSR, pre Gorbachev where there was an underground black market and knowledge of western ways, Korea is so controlled. No internet, no satellite tv (I'm sorry but it was really CNN that tore down the Berlin wall). Every image, every thought, every word is controlled by the almighty leader.
When you truly learn about the North Korean gov't , how the people live, the control of the leader and his maniacal ways and wishes for the world, chills will run down your spine. There people starve while the "father" builds more weapons to someday defeat the evil west.
This is where our attentions should lie for such regimes threaten the future of freedom for all mankind.
This is why we can't be ignorant, it's too expensive and threaten to all we hold dear.

DH was just telling me that their leader refuses to participate in any talks regarding nuclear weapons if the US is involved. It's very scary.

Ah, exactly, that is why truly successful leaders throughout world history are skilled in diplomacy. This is not a tactic that Bush likes to use, nor does he have skill in. Our current president NEVER left this country, even for a pleasure vacation before he became president... now that is scarey

i think they are indeed a huge threat, but I also think that Bush & his cronies know that we would get our asses handed to us. Especially since no one else is backing us on that one (that I know of).

Yes. Who would teach him to be a world traveller though...daddy Bush who threw up on the Japanese PM? Not a good role model there either....
I think Bush is very provincial in that way.

Yes, your DH is correct. We can only negoiate through our ever decreasing leverage in the UN. Many of pour former friends are no longer supporting us due to the situation in Iraq which makes our position even more precarious.
ETA: This administration has been successful at adding to the ever increasing list of non-supporter/enemies of the US.
How does ones father head the CIA and get said son into Yale but said son never travels outside of the US?
I mean really, even middle class kids, back pack through Europe.
Something tells me they could afford it. It's not like the family vacations were depending upon racking up enough frequent flyer miles
I guess it's all about priorities. If one thinks their culture is superior to all others then they won't travel... sad. Foreign dignitaries know this and are over it.

Useless according to our agenda due to the ever increasing leverage of the African and Asian voting block in the UN... they are the majority of the world, we are a minority. We just don't like the fact that the balance has shifted.
They had to kiss up to us for a few hundred years (colonialism and post) but now the tables have turned it's just the west doesn't want to admit the world power that is now India and China. Their neighbors will soon follow.

Re: RARE pictures! taken in N. Korea
I can't remember where I saw it or read it, but I'm pretty sure I saw something on TV about N. Korea. They let a journalist in and and everything was staged for him. I remember him talking about how they took his cell phone at the airport, and showed him those "model" farm houses, etc....
It's scary what goes on in the world.

Thanks to the original poster for sharing this..I'm sorry...I forgot your username as I was typing this....... Glad that you will share this with your students. I saw a program on the Discovery Channel about North Korea. They are very nationalists and very proud of their way of life. They push their children as students to be the best they can be. And yes, it's true about having a guide following you around while you are there. They also have no outside exposure..internet...TV....in terms of only what the government only want them to see....but the funny thing is their leader has internet service and loves to watch American programs.....and for them to show anything they have that is of American Origin...they love to do that.... Maybe if you contact the Discovery Channel they can get you a copy of this documentary....it was really good...and a great tool for your students to learn about the world.....
